When will 2020-21 NBA season start? Here's the latest reported outlook

The Boston Celtics began their 2019-20 season exactly one year ago Friday. But COVID-19 has thrown the league's schedule completely off-kilter.

The 2020 NBA Finals ended just two weeks ago, as the pandemic forced 22 teams to play an "NBA Restart" beginning in early August.

So, how will the league balance getting back on a normal schedule with giving teams enough time off?

Which Celtics players are most likely to leave this offseason?

According to Yahoo Sports' Vincent Goodwill, the NBA is targeting Jan. 18, 2021 -- Martin Luther King Jr. Day -- as a start date for the upcoming season.

That date isn't locked in, per Goodwill, who reported a Christmas Day start "is still in play." The league's goal is to complete the 2020-21 season in time to get back on track for a normal October-to-June schedule for the 2021-22 campaign, according to Goodwill, so the sooner this season can begin, the better.

The NBA will give teams a two-month notice before the start of the season, though, so that notice would need to come in the next few days if the league wants to start on Christmas. Goodwill reports MLK Day is a more "pragmatic" start date for the league.

After reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics will have less rest this offseason than all but three other teams. Veterans like Kemba Walker and Daniel Theis (who just had a knee procedure) obviously would benefit from more time off, but the C's -- like the rest of the NBA -- will have to make do.

Goodwill also reported another interesting tidbit: that Louisville is being considered as a potential alternate home site for the Toronto Raptors. Canada has banned American travel into its country due to COVID-19, which is why the Toronto Blue Jays (Buffalo) and Toronto FC (East Hartford) both have had to move stateside.

Report: Toronto Raptors could play home games in Louisville next season

COVID continues to change the plans almost daily

Coronavirus has complicated international travel. Which is why the Toronto Raptors trained in Florida before the NBA bubble and the Toronto Blue Jays played home games in Buffalo this baseball season.

What will the Raptors do next season, when the NBA wants to play with fans in arenas?

Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports:

The Raptors face a similar dilemma, and league sources tell Yahoo Sports one alternate location that has been broached is Louisville, Kentucky.
Louisville has tried to get an NBA team before. This could be a nice audition.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Hornets (who later became the Pelicans) split time between New Orleans and Oklahoma City in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. That paved the way for Oklahoma City to get the Thunder (nee the Seattle SuperSonics) a couple years later.

Of course, expansion isn’t necessarily imminent. Neither is a franchise permanently relocating. Heck, there’s a long way before the Raptors play home games in Louisville. They’d obviously prefer to play in Toronto.

But among the many considerations for a complex next season, this one at least makes sense on paper.

The bad part is that it's night time here and close to bedtime, so it will be some nightmare. :D I don't even know what this ranking is all about. Gotta ask the marketing department of Silver regarding this.

Yes, I know, Steve. My son used to play the older versions a few years back. But how can they come up with a ranking for an animated game? :D

never underestimate Pat Riley

He will for sure pull a rabbit out of his hat to get to the finals with a hope of winning.....

Pat Riley discusses Heat future, plans for keeping core intact

Tim Reynolds | Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) -- Pat Riley is always looking around for ways to make the Miami Heat better. This offseason has him wondering if that improvement might come from within.

The Heat president said Friday that the top offseason priority of the Eastern Conference champions “is to take care of the players that we have” such as free-agent-to-be Goran Dragic, all while maintaining salary cap flexibility to add an impact player in a 2021 offseason that could see many stars on the move.

“We have a good idea of what we want to do,” Riley said in his annual end-of-season media availability.

No plan can be considered completely firm yet; the NBA’s board of governors were meeting Friday, simultaneous to Riley speaking, to discuss ideas about when it might be feasible to start next season --- with Dec. 22 as the initial target for a season of about 72 games. And the financial details for next season remain unclear as well, such as the salary cap and luxury tax numbers. All that will have an obvious impact on every team’s plans, Miami’s included.

But Miami is already clear on some matters: The Heat has no intention on letting extension-eligible All-Star center Bam Adebayo leave (though it remains unclear when his extension will get done). Riley added that the notion of bringing back this past season’s team as close to intact as possible has crossed his mind. Kelly Olynyk has a player option for about $12 million, while Meyers Leonard, Jae Crowder, Solomon Hill and Derrick Jones Jr. are among Miami’s free agents.

“We know what our priorities are,” Riley said. “It is to take care of the players that we have, that we have to make decisions on almost immediately. We know Bam has a decision to make and we do with him. We know the guys that have sacrificed for us that we really like, our free agents, especially Goran.”

The Heat may have ended up as the surprise of the league this season, with All-NBA player Jimmy Butler’s arrival leading a turnaround that saw Miami go from missing the 2019 NBA playoffs to winding up in this season’s finals as a No. 5 seed. Riley raved about what Butler has brought to the Heat, and also lauded coach Erik Spoelstra for doing what he called a masterful job this season.

a very good read although I don't care what Lue says but I am betting Kawhi's Load management is still going to be an issue for the remainder of the team. He needs to grow up, learn how to smile as well as being able to talk. His reclusive personality along with his incredible abilities only serve to add more animosity from the grunts on the team who work and play hard every game

Just saw this on my YouTube feed. Jordan: "20 years from now, I'm pretty sure Lebron may beat me."
May. . . Still not sure. :D
