That strikes me as a potentially very controversial image - particularly in the USA - I'm surprised (pleasantly) that no one has taken offence

Yet ...

We have people who are experts at taking offense at anything and everything. Nothing is too trivial to cause offense to someone. We live in a PC world where everybody has to feel sorry about something they said that offended the easily offendable. I know, I'm a master at offending the easily offendable.

Some rich political backer of Romney’s made some wisecrack about birth control and now he is on the apology circuit. You know you screwed up big time if you have to go on the Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton ass-kissing apology tour.

I can remember when I was a kid watching the Ed Sullivan show. The comedians of the day always told Pollock jokes because they could back then. Cripes, now days you would have to go on some Polish ass-kissing apology tour if you did that. I don’t think the Polish have a Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton type figure that you could go to and kiss their ring though. I guess it’s easier to make amends if you have a godfather figure that claims to speak for all of those that you offended so you can go on a radio/tv tour with the godfather and proclaim how sorry you are to the offended masses.

A year or so ago, there was a show profiling the best TV series of the '70s. They interviewed Norman Lear, the hot producer of the day and creator of such classics as All in the Family. When asked if he could do that show [All in the Family] today, Lear replied no. Sad isn't it?

I agree that you could probably not ever do a show again like All in the Family with Archie Bunker. Archie was an equal opportunity bigot who picked on all races and creeds. I always thought it was funny when he referred to his lawyers as the seven savage Jew lawyers when he threatened to sic them on someone.

Just like this "Jeremy Lin" thing. The Knicks lost for the first time in 13 days and ESPN said the Knicks have "chink in the armour".. Now everyone is trying to say it was a degrading reference to the Asian culture.... Give me a F*ckin break....

Great examples of the authoritarian nature of political correctness. Ironically, IME, if you truly want to have a successful multi-cultural society, individuals need to be more willing to let things roll off their backs rather than becoming hyper-sensitized to every perceived slight...My $0.02

I agree Doc. We tend to spend more time celebrating what makes us different than we do celebrating what makes us one in humanity. Where I work, we *appreciate* a different minority almost every month. We have African-American appreciation month, Asian-Pacific appreciation month, American Indian appreciation month, and Hispanic appreciation month. I might have left some out. There are yearly awards for Black engineer of the year, Asian engineer of the year, and Hispanic engineer of the year. Lots of minorities have their own organizations with their own agendas and women have their own organization.
