Bryston 28B Cubed, CH Precision A 1.5 Stereo Amplifiers, Brinkmann MONO Amplifiers but its advisible to use the Brinkmann Pre-amplifierHello all,
Would love some advise of a couple of non-tube based monoblock amps. My budget is up to 18k. I am open to new or used.
Current system built -
Pass XP-20 pre
Technics SL G700 mk1 CD/SACD/Network
Kinki Studio stereo EX-M7(replacing with some monoblocks)
PureAudio Project Trio w/Coax - biwire/amp able
Rega P6 - tweaked out
All cabling Harmonic Technology
I listen most to CD/SACD, Dowloaded digital music, vinyl. Was looking for neutral with sliver of warm.
For reference, of my taste, my theater/multi SACD/DVDA is
Bryston B9^2
Cary Audio Cinema 12
Arcam FMJ 139 universal
Cambridge Audio CXU universal
Tannoy XT 8/6/C
All cabling Harmonic Technology
-would describe this as fairly neutral with a touch toward analytical.
I vote for Pass also, and the X260.8s are really good.Jasper, I'm late to the party so if you're still searching I'll cast a vote for my PASS X260.8's. I couldn't be happier, they're driving a pair of Revel Studio 2's

I agree with your assessment. SS gives really good control on the bass, my recommendation would be the Passlabs XA60.8s. Smooth, natural and much less sterile than many other SS choices. Big bottle tube amps would also work very well I reckon, not so sure on lower output tube amps? Having said that, the 8 15 inch drivers have very light cones and don't move that much. If that is less 'work' than shifting a typical 12 inch cone woofer in a ported cabinet? Not sure. The impedance on mine is 5 ohms. On performance v similar speakers at this price point, IMO no contest! In fact double the price and I would struggle to get this level of performance from another brands speakers IMO.I have the PAP trio 10 Voxativ and the PAP Trio 15 with either a horn or Coax.
The trio 15 is a much more resolving speaker than people realize. Its can produce fine detail if given the right amp.
I have driven a lot of amps through these speakers. This is a general take on them.
First, they are 96 db efficient, but, those 15" paper drivers take power to stop and start. Especially in free air.
Second, the Coax crossover has a lot of stuff in the way of the current. The other drivers have less, but there is still a fairly power hungry crossover there.
What am I saying.
These speakers like a SS amp for the way they handle the woofers and.produce bass.
These speakers like a tube for the way they drive the mid/high drivers.
If you want body and bass, consider a SS amp. Class D Atmasphere played as well as my Dartzeep 108 model 1.
If you want more inner detail and harmonic content that makes a more natural and real sound, consider say a 300B in push pull. A friend has a Deja Vu remake of the WE on Ebay that is around $5k with good WE tubes. A ART series CJ will give all sorts of power and thrust but might loose a lttle natural. A VAC phi200 will have less balls, but have a little more sense of linear and clean. I have a very highly resolving KT88 PP that blew the Dartzeel/Atmasphere away in detail and natural tone. But I miss the power and grip of the SS.
There is no perfect answer. But there are excellent combinations that make wonderful music. You just need to pick a direction.
Better to stick with mono amps if you are there already. A stereo amp would require re arranging the system and most likely new speaker cables. All for virtually nothing.I'm really curious. Why only monoblocks? There are some incredible stereo amplifiers these days.
Monoblocks allow you to place the amps right by the speakers, minimizing the length of the speaker cable. With tube amps in particular, this is helpful as they tend to be more sensitive to speaker cables. It also helps to reduce cost since good speaker cables tend to be expensive.I'm really curious. Much better separation than a stereo amp alsoMonoblocks allow you to place the amps right by the speakers, minimizing the length of the speaker cable. The other, probably more obvious advantage is the power supplies of the two amps are not shared. This means the power supply has less noise (so less intermodulation distortion) and also eliminates crosstalk.
Agree and also room treatments and quality cables.Much better separation than a stereo amp also
I second this post, valvet amps are under the radar and underrated - they give some of the ultra high end amps a good run for their money.65 watt class a /8ohms is enough a lot of speakers ,but the interesting thing is that there is nothing left to modifiy*, WBT sockets, Furutech IEC, Alto Extremo footers and pure silver in the short signal path. just sit down and listen to music.
*Hard for a diy guy

Definitely stay with the monos. There are advantages in sound quality along with the small disadvantage of needing two power cords, etc.Yeah I hear you. Was weighing the selling off cabinet, cables etc to fit around a new amp vs look for a couple of nice monos and keep what I have.
Admittedly I was looking for some suggestions that would be outside what I could source locally as that is slim. I am keeping an eye on the used market and hoped to get some advice from those who have been into more recent gear. But will definitely audition some Pass amps.
I am really satisfied with the PAP trios, so I do not see myself moving from them any time soon. They are, if one wants, a tweakers paradise, but have found them to be quite nice out of the box.
Those are no good, and a rip off. Not a kind recommendation at all.Check out the Block Audio Mono SE amplifiers on ‘playitagain’ on the web and A’GON. Class A, powerful and musical.
(No affiliation - I own the Block Line and Mono-SE amps)
We can agree to disagree. I love them and gave an earnest recommendation. Peace out. Those are no good, and a rip off. Not a kind recommendation at all.
The Konus amplifiers are a very well-kept secret and would be excellent for your PAP speakers—small and mighty amps made by a dedicated designer. Good luck.Agree here. For your speakers you should focus on purity instead of a more traditional high power design. The Valvet suggestion above is a good one, and you might also consider the Konus Audio Robusto 3000 monos (http://www.konus-audio.com/robusto.html). 33 watts/channel, class AB, alive.
Heads up that I import Konus into North America.
