SET amp owners thread

It was anything but veiled and woolly. Yes Altec does not have same highs as Radian or TAD, nor does Garrard and SPU. Altec goes till 16 and rolls off earlier

Being 6m away does take out a bit as compared to being closer with the phone.
Just going by what I hear on your recording. For my recordings I sit a bit over 3 meters from the speakers.

I can't believe people here are seriously making comparative evaluations of systems, amps, etc. based on smartphone recordings. No wonder audiophilia has crushed credibility in the larger world. -Phil
Just having some fun, Phil...you should try it some time ;)

People with class D amps don’t actually have fun Brad, they just measure well

People are not posting Zu videos, totally understand that. And you to need to be on a trip to enjoy them

I listen to tube amps 99% of the time. Right now, I'm listening to a custom EL156 single-ended pentode amp. It has just three tubes. A gz32 rectifier, an EF12 input-driver, and one EL156. 20w, which is plenty for my Zu Definitions. What's between your preamp and speaker? That said (and asked), when I lash up the Class Ds, it's a roaring good time!

Phil

Phil, not everyone into these videos
There's at least one extremely high profile member here respected by all who hadn't got time for that malarkey
Many of the rest of us look at it, like you, w total incredulity.

Let me know when you've actually heard a Zu speaker. -Phil
Ked has heard them, Phil. At mine. Back in the day when they were ticking only a couple of boxes.

Well, then, time for a re-orientation. -Phil

Given that the UK is little larger than a US aircraft carrier, it should be easy to get an updated listen at Marc's, mask and hand sanitizer and all that. Heck, the whole country is only 2/3rds the size of California alone. Get together! -Phil

If I don't like Marc's system, I would rather face the virus. I am not surviving that trip

I completely understand that you didn't like it with EAR p-p amps. But he's transformed it since. It likely wasn't the speaker you disliked. Anyway, you're all neighbours over there. Have at it - with appropriate social distancing. -Phil

Marc's was always with Nats, the problem then could have been his room. The ear was elsewhere which sounded better. Marc now has a new room and given each week he has something new, so roughly 306 upgrades since

What not everyone here knows is that I have tried to embrace and love the Class D amp...owned three different make/models and listened at length to at least a dozen other models. Lacking realism are the kindest words I can use...
