The new audiophile vinyl series The Original Source from Deutsche Grammophon (AAA)

The sonic quality overall is poor compared to other performances like Arrau Giulini and Fleisher Szell

Mouth watering:
Another interesting cutting exercise. Side 4 is two seconds short of thirty minutes.

Is the new batch ready for dispatch?
I'm sure the date was Friday gone.

Some have received their Tchaikovsky 1 and Mozart. IIRC the M6 and Scriabin/Tchaikovsky are due this Friday.

As some of you probably also got the notice, I received notice today that the 4 new LPs from the recent batch are shipping.

Hopefully, they will avoid the strip search at JFK this time and associated delays. My last batch was opened and resealed - likely by a customs inspector.

Can't wait!!

Yes, received my shipment notice and tracking number this morning too for the latest (4 LP) TOS batch :)
Interesting that on the DG website it say's in their advert that this latest batch isn't due for shipment until 1st week of March 2025 !

Hello, my four records of the new batch also arrived today.

Got only the chance to listen to the Scriabin/Tchaikovsky so far.

But this is extraordinary good. Very quiet vinyl with excellent soundstage. Hope the other three will live up to this high standard!
Excellent news, without doubt the most consistently impressive sonics of any current programme of ongoing vinyl series releases, good to hear this current batch don't break this run.
Customs says dropped in the UK Friday just gone.

For those in the US (that decline the cost of expensive euro-shipping and mediocre customer service,) the latest four LPs are available for pre-order on Amazon.
Greetings,

Would this Mahler 6 be a desirable recording to have or would there be a better performance to seek out?

Best wishes,
Don

I've never ordered from a record label.
These days I mostly buy online from the US at Music Direct or Acoustic Sounds for classical music, sometimes Amazon for non-classical music.

This will be a great Mahler 6, especially since the original release lacked the sonics of the reissues.

As to “better” ... it’s more a matter of taste and preference. Great recordings of the 6th include Haitink, Kubelik, Bernstein, Tilson-Thomas.

And besides, one can never have too many Mahler recordings! (devilish grin)

I have a moderately sized Mahler collection on LP. Among the 6ths I find:

Bernstein, NY Phil, Columbia / Sony M3S 776 1968
Bernstein, Vienna, DG/Analogphonic 427 697-1 1989
Haitink, Concergebouw, Philips 6761 001 (box set 5-10)
Kubelik , Bavarian Rundfunks, DG 2720 033 (box set 1-10)
Neumann, Czech PO, Supraphon, 10 3141-1
Tilson Thomas, San Francisco, SFS 0040

Of these I'd suggest the Bernstein from his second Mahler cycle on DG, remastered by Analogphonic. Unfortunately this issue has become expensive, as has most in this series. Check the link.

Bernstein is the favorite of many. His 1968 version on Columbia is rewarding -- mint copy on discogs for $35, check the link.

... after that I do like Otto Klemperer, Bruno Walter, Barbirolli, Solti, Horenstein, Kubelik and Haitink as Mahler conductors.

but alas, I have no von Karajan for the 6th. The TOS release may be excellent. I look forward to reports. Fwiw, HvK only recorded Mahler 4,5,6 and 9.

For those looking to start a Mahler collection, I suggest the Kubelik box set of all ten symphonies. Yes there are many indivdual symphony issuances that may be preferred, but for a basic starting point, this gives relatively inexpensive access to all 10. There are others. Check the link in my signature.

It is indeed a desirable recording to have.
