Might someone suggest a horn that I could cross with my sealed Altec 416-8B woofers which might deliver great phantom center coverage for movie dialogue?
I believe the gentleman doesn't want a dedicated center channel, but a horn that will provide a
phantom center....since your already in the
Altec family, I can enthusiastically recommend the model 19, especially if you by pass the internal passive crossover and direct drive the speakers with an active crossover with DSP capabilities....
You will have one impressive system for both music and Cinema.
Cheers....
Or if you are unable to get a stereo pair of speakers to give you the performance you need/want for your cinema center channel, perhaps consider a smaller Altec.....Model 14 might get you there.
No center is best, unless you can use exactly the same speaker at the same height as the L/R.
I use two large horns with a drop down screen in between and it’s great.
I think that a center channel which is (mostly) dedicated to dialogue will provide more clarity than a phantom. I have Vandersteen Model 7 XTRMs with a VCC-5. I have tried it both ways and the dialogue is clearer with the center channel in place. For music a phantom may be better.
