Wadax uses Roon and has used it since they have made servers. The rest of your comment needs to be addressed to Javier and the design team at Wadax.

They didn't answer my question, only sent their christmas greetings to me. Maybe they believed they made optimal on Roon with their custom extensions. Until now, they are right but Roon always get problems with their new version. I wish Roon will be stable about SQ in the future

Difficult alternative, especially for companies like Wadax that are not very big. Developing your own software gives you great independence but the cost must be high. Taiko opted to develop its own software after Roon's SQ crash last year, it appears that Wadax opts not to do so and to use the resources in other developments. They must be tough decisions to make.

While waiting to listen to the Wadax Reference I can't stop thinking how great would would be getting a few 15" tapes recorded directly from its output in a Studer or Ampex top machine with some of my favorite digital recordings. Unfortunately I forgot to send the letter to Santa ...

trying to process in my mind where that would take you. i imagine you are talking about some Jordi Savall recordings.

would tape deliver more than the native files through your dCS?

where my mind goes along these lines might be to use the Wadax Reference to master vinyl from files. it might be the way for many to surpass their native files on other dacs with vinyl. whereas normally it's a question which might sound better. it might not work out that way, but it would not surprise me if it did.

Nothing I have read managed to persuade me that the Wadax was a step ahead in digital sound reproduction, and I have learned about it and had the first direct reports almost two years ago. But I have an open mind and I am ready to take the challenge, although it carries some risk!

Wait for the release of the 6th and 7th. I was at the concert a few weeks ago and it was a complete rediscovery of the symphonies, particularly the 7th. Rhythm and dance at level I could not anticipate in this well known symphony. The kind of performance that makes you understand why some musicologists risked to say that this symphony was composed in a drunken state. As said by Savall, Beethoven performed with instruments of the period or reproductions played like it was played at Beethoven time, with an orchestra of about 60 elements.

It this the perfect excuse to get an Wadax Reference?

Most excellent! We look forward to listening to it! And yes, of all the wonderful digital that has graced the world in the last few years, the Wadax intrigues me to the most...that and of course Yamada San's new digital which Audio Exotics was due to release with him this year and presumably thus is to be coming out next year.

I'm sure the Wadax is an excellent sounding DAC. But c'mon man, even Radio Shack never made anything this fugly.
Actually, making something this good sounding and this ugly is an accomplishment that should not be under-appreciated. Is there a precedent for it anytime in the history of high end audio?



One has to wonder, where did they get their inspiration for it's industrial design? It certainly wasn't from Pininfarina or IDEO.
I wonder if it was from some of the ugliest automobile front bumpers ever made? Here are some possibilities:

1934 Ford Model 40



1958 Lincoln Continental



1951 Allard P2 Safari



1950 Rover P4 Classic



And my personal favorite: The legendary 1936 Scout Scarab (named after an Egyptian dung beetle. Not exactly a surprise that it was not a big seller.)



I know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. But still when I see gear like this, I'm glad my gear is out of site and that I listen mostly in the dark!

my initial reaction to the Wadax look was negative.....but within a few moments it grew on me. this was way before i ever seriously considered owning it. and this is more what i associate with it's look....organic and alive. not cold and sterile like many hifi icons. designed to disappear and not be a focus....especially dacs.

in fact, my darTZeel 468's have a similar in-your-face spunky design approach too. they are not afraid of being unique and strong looking.

Good one! However, I can understand calling the Wadax a lot of things, but "designed to disappear" it is not, at least visually.
BTW I think the 468 is gorgeous.
PS to Elliot- the Lampi doesn't count in any conversation about the visual merits of audio gear due to it's lack of uniqueness.. It doesn't distinguish itself visually from countless other pieces of tube gear!
