What's Best in Boxing today?

Exciting flght last weekend between David Morrell and David Benavidez. Most of the fight was thought in a telephone booth!

Morrell has only 11 pro fights. Morrell's defense is not his forté, and I noticed how he often kept himself wide open after throwing punches. Benavidez was effective with his jab, counters , body punches and uppercut...Anyway, good fight.

So Canelo vs Crawford is set for September. While you wait, here's a playlist I put together with 25 of Crawford's fights, in chronological order, so you can appreciate the master at work!

Absolutely scary and dominant in his prime.

Top Rank has published videos of fights without commentary. I find the absence of commentary makes it easier to focus on the "action", and you can you can hear the impact of each punch more clearly.

Here's a good one of Naoya Inoue, who has an upcoming fight in Vegas on May 4th, against Raymond Cardenas (26-1 record).

Every punch is thrown by Inoue with the same (high) intensity. Watch his impressive footwork, and how he stays perfectly balanced all the time. The distance between his two legs is pretty much always the same, and he's always ready to block, slip, counter, or attack. He is also always highly focused. He knocked down his opponent twice during the fight, first with a step back and a counter hook, then the second time with a straight right hand counter against a very hesitant jab by his opponent. It was perfectly timed and lightning quick - his opponent just never saw it coming.

Some say that knock out power in boxing is a "gift" that some people have and some don't - meaning that it's not something you can acquire through training. In my modest experience, it really comes from perfecting your form. You see beginners with the same issues: their stance is often wrong, they push forward by leaning their upper bodies instead of pushing from their legs up and transferring the weight into their punch.

Inoue fights at 55kg (122 pounds). He's not a big guy... But imagine dropping a 55 kg weight (if you can even lift it...) on yout foot! That's what's happening, but with the weight moving forward instead of down.
