Another rare vinyl I discovered in SF, in a sealed version. Sounds wonderful. Recorded in 1962 by Rudy van Gelder, no less. Intoxicating mix of bossa nova jazz with African-fused melody and rhythms.
Another SF record find: a very young 20-year-old Wynton Marsalis playing with a very old Art Blakey, recorded in Paris in 1981. It’s a big band style of jazz, but nice full recording with plenty of dynamics.
Another nice SF vinyl find: Dollar Brand aka Abdullah Ibrahim’s African style jazz. He manages to fuse these two into a medley of intoxicating tunes. A true creative mind. A nice double album that’s recorded well.
I remember watching one of those “we hired a bunch of guitarists to play a solo” video back years ago. She was one of those hired. Other guitarists could certainly “shred” harder and/or were outrageously fast, flashy or unique beyond measure. Lari’s solo was just…extremely pleasing/satisfying. I remember backtracking and watching her play that solo over and over thinking…”she needs to make a record”. That’s no shade on all the other axe-slingers. Though inspired by many, she’s found a unique voice on, quite frankly, an over-played instrument. That’s hard to do.
DISCLAIMER: No relation. No affiliation. No pay out. Just digging the music.
Another rarity from my SF Memorial Day vinyl hunting trip: a ERA records reissue of a famous Mercury Living Presence recording of Rodgers composition Pinocchio completed with narration. In typical MLP style, the recording is vivid with excellent detail and instrumental clarity. Just three full-range microphones were used as always.
Foxes in the Snow by Jason Isbell. Fantastic pressing. Vinyl is dead quiet, dynamic, dimensional, and better than streaming. I wish all contemporary records were pressed this well. Kudos to Jason and his label for caring about putting out a quality product at a great price.
I’ve had the Stanton 681EEE + JICO Urushi Shibata stowed away for a long time. This sounds far better than I remember. Then again, the entire rest of the system has changed since I last used it.
