What's the best sounding system(s) you have ever heard that are not your own.

It's a tie between Mike and Steve for best audio host.

I moved several weeks ago and everything is in crates in one of my garages

Still trying to decide the best place in the house to put it

Oh wow...good luck with that. Hopefully, you have a few rooms that are nice and big like your last place. Please post photos when up and running even if not fully calibrated to the room.

You need to get TWO systems!

No one should be forced to look at the same four walls while listening to music!

---Steve, would you like some members' recommendations as to where put your system in your new home? :b

Hey, you can try us, and see if it inspires you.
{You simply have to provide us with some pictures of your best candidates; rooms.}

* And we already know that the same sound system is used for Stereo Music listening (& Multichannel), as well for Surround sound when watching Movies. ...Brief; Audio/Video system-in-1.

=> Of course at the end it ultimately comes down to your own choice,
but it is fun to share the load with your friends... :b

I owned the Celestion SL6si's...my very first speakers. For the money, i found no better...and knew the SL600si, SL700SE very well, as well the later and somewhat less successful 100 & 300 models. Celestion knew how to make magic.

Anyone ever hear the SL600 with the Celestion 2000 pair of di-pole Subs?

A friend here has those Lloyd, great sound for sure!

20th Century - JBL L300/Mc Intosh amplification/Thorens table/Nakamchi deck
21st Century - Wilson Maxx/Boulder amps/Boulder source/Trasnsparnt cabling

I never look at walls while I am listening to music ;)

One room is sufficient

A local dealer took a pair in part exchange long ago and at that time I could not resist to the bargain. The SL600's were free from any "boxyness" but I always felt the tweeters were a little hot. Also, IMHO, the quality of the electronic crossover compromised the whole system - I remember some people modified and upgraded them to much better performance. The best part were the dipole subs - in the end I sold the SL600s and used the subs with my Quad ESL63.

The secret of the SL600s was in the material used to build the boxes - aerolam, a light and very rigid aluminum honeycomb structure used in airplanes.

I'm a speaker guy so I seem to remember each impressive loudspeaker I have come across through the years that for me produced the best sound and I would like to group them according to era as during those times, I regard them the best.

Late 1980s:

Thiel CS 5 with Jeff Rowland Electronics with Sota turntable and ET2 arm. (I forgot the cartridge) I heard this in Audio Excellence, Embarcadero area, SF.

1990s:

IRS Beta with VTLs in a local dealer showroom.

Magnepan Tympani IVa with Cello electronics at a HK dealer showroom.

Duntech Sovereign with Rowland electronics at a HK dealer's showroom - Winston Ma's Golden String.

Sequerra Signature with Rockport Sirius in the first HK Hifi Show.

Genesis 1.1 with Jadis electronics and ML digital front end in Manila.

Wilson Alexandria X2 MKI with Burmester all the way in Manila.

B&W Matrix 800 with Jadis 800 6-chassis mono blocks, Cello pre-amp and Forsell table and arm in Manila.

Entec Ribbon Speakers and Subwoofers with various amps (Forsell, McCormack, etc)

2000 till present:

Sonus Stradivari Homage with ARC Ref 610, Ref pre-amps and VPI TNT Triplanar/Koetsu Tiger Eye in Manila.

Von Schweikert VR 11 with VAC/Manley superamps with a host of analog front end in Manila.

Von Schweikert VR9 with Lamm amps, Valvet preamps and a host of analog front end in Manila.

Wilson X2MKII with Lamm ML3, Lamm preamp and R2R in Danville, CA.

The last entry, and certainly not the least, was Steve's system, though he does not live in Danville anymore, as he just stated. :)

Another neighbor of mine had the SL600 and 6000 dipole subs, not the 2000. Those were my dream subs then, as I also got to own a pair of 600s and then 600Si's in the late 80s. Those 6000 open baffle subs were something else, driven by the ARC d115MKII, the organ sound coming from Cantate Domino was so deep it was like almost crawling from the subs to the listening area. :) And during those days, was something of a rarity though the subs themselves were pretty expensive even during that time and it included its own active crossover unit.

1. Apogee Grands with Krell Master Reference amplification chain at Chicago CES many years ago. I sat and talked with Jason Bloom for over an hour, discussing our favorites music selections, etc.

2. Martin-Logan Statements at CES, can't remember the rest!

Jadis, you're right...it was the 6000 dipole. How did it compare with today's latest subs and full range? I think it had its own electronic crossover designed for the SL600s and required its own amp...yes?

I have now heard ML Statements from a number of people...including the GM at the dealer...still his favorite speaker to this day.

Wow...with you and Microstrip....wish i could hear them....particularly as i have a soft spot for Celestions.

Lloydelee,

Yes, it comes with its own electronic crossover and it needs another power amp for the sub. The 600/6000 system, on the whole, can sound 'veiled' by today's standards. If I recall that tandem, I couldn't fault the sub. It was seamless and it did not get in the way of calling attention to itself. And which was why the 6000 was highly praised when it was paired with the MLogan CLS in the pages on TAS. It's a nice piece of sub, but I think it does not have the air and volume of today's best, say the JL Gothams.

One system that sticks in my head, is one I heard years ago featuring stacked original Quads. The TT was a Goldmund Reference and the cartridge was a Kiseki Lapis Lazuli along with all ARC gear. I think a SP10Mk2 preamp and a ARC D250Mk2 servo. The rendition of the midrange was magical.

Another system was a system utilizing the original B&W Nautilus speakers, in a large room with ancillary gear that I don't remember. This system had a purity of sound that was simply spectacular.
