Obviously it could be your system or your recordings. The point about lack of low end is worth noting. Quite often a subjectively perceived imbalance is due to the opposite end of the spectrum from where it sounds like it is.
So some basic measurements of your system might be worthwhile. Or if you don't have that ability, try some EQ on recordings if you have computer playback available. Piece of cake to lift or decrease either end of the spectrum a few db and see what helps.
