Your advice for building the 'Best Bang for the Buck' system

My advice would be to absolutely start with a computer for your front end.

Pair it with a nice external DAC.

Take a long, hard look at active speakers.

This can really simplify your signal path and offer you excellent synergy as the internal amplifiers will be spec'd to your speakers. Give strong consideration to internally bi-amped speakers for even more efficiency.

If your DAC has XLR out and your active speakers have XLR in, you eliminate speaker cables and keep the signal at line level between DAC and speakers.
