Your priorities are----?

I can equate to this RG, I strive to create a large scale, 3D, visceral performance surrounding my listening chair, that has me almost participating in the event as apposed to merely listening to a nice approximation of the performance, in front of me, and between the transducers. I never fire up the big rig for background listening at sociably acceptable dB levels, I prefer to run it only for a handfull of hours a week at *experience levels*

Ditto!! Just that I like to fire up the rig every day.....(-:

It does make sense and we are one in the same Davey. When it comes to Jazz and Classical, I find that to converse about it requires more than just enjoying music. At RMAF I would ask for some Jazz music and immediately they would ask me about this or that style. I had no idea what they were talking about and I would say "either." Like to not sound like an idiot at the next show :).

Back to tapping my toe as I listen to Eric Clapton's MTV Unplugged Layla....

Yup, you got it.
BTW, I just love that EC Unplugged album...particularly 'Layla' and 'Rollin & Tumbln'. Superbly well recorded rock album, IMO.

Guys there is an Adele 25 thread running on this forum. Surely that should answer the question if audiophiles are music lovers

Not necessarily, I LOVE Adele's music, I really dislike the sound that she is saddled with on her CD's and LP's. Therefore, I listen to her as much as possible, BUT I will not buy her CD's or her LP's, as to me that would be a waste of money. Luckily, I don't need to acquire her music in order to either appreciate it or to listen to it. BTW, I can see no reason why one cannot be a music lover and an audiophile...no reason at all.

If you REALLY want serious music discovery power , use Roon with Tidal.

My status as of late is, well, confused...
I tell myself I am not in it for the equipment, then I go get my world rocked at Steves or Mikes home or at Gary's place and I cant even power my system up for a week because I am so disappointed.
Then I go have a fantastic music event with a Technics TT run through a HK receiver blasted out a pair of giant Cerwin Vegas with zip cord and a AT cart!

This whole insanity started for me in the mid 70's when I heard LZ Black Dog through AR speakers, a Kenwood receiver and TT. One damn song, the rest is history. Then I wanted to hear live TV through my menial system and I ripped the cover off my Zenith TV and soldered a RCA cable to the volume slider so we could blast CHiP's through my stereo. The receiver even had a matrix setting, whoo hoo multichannel.

I guess more than anything I am in it for the experience of the moment if you may. I love good sound, I love band history, I love recording techniques, I love the instruments themselves, I love the interaction with other people on whatever level, but I also love to sit alone and listen.

And EVERY damn time I tell myself I am not in it for the tech, I find my self with a tape measure or a laser level in hand, moving this here, that over there, hanging this here or there!

Dazed and confused.

I like your writing style Mike. You should check 'The Wall' - Roger Waters, on Blu-ray, multichannel 7.1 hi-res audio. It has a stereo LPCM soundtrack too.
And Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 multichannel with overhead sounds.
Should be right your alley. :b

My priorities have changed a lot recently. Maybe I just don't have time or energy for audiophilia at the moment, but my main priority now is enjoyment, pure and simple. I just want to get swept away, goosebumps aplenty, and I don't care how I get there.

It's got to be about the music, but the hobby dictates the OCD swapping of/aspiring to, gear.
W/a little financial windfall I'm just about to come into, tbh, I could buy another 5k lp's and go to more classical live, and that's a debate to be had versus my possible journey into a pricey new avenue of spkrs.
Diapason puts his finger on it w/wanting that emotional connection. If he has it now, he should stick. Tbh, I do myself, and am at odds as to whether to go down the path of an uber spendy upgrade. How much do I want it/need it? Answer is "sort of, maybe, not sure/definitely not"
Interestingly, horns demoes initially gave me that "hairs up on the back of my arm feeling", but a dozen no-pressure horns auditions subsequent, I'm not so excited. Partially familiarity, partially picking the sound apart, partially knowing that w/tweaking my spkrs really have more potential to be tapped, and can stand up in rarified company.
And this may be the main reason why even if I find a pr of horns or planars that really excite me, I may walk away, happy w/the musical connection I get w/my current brands choices.
