Zero Distortion: Altec Assault and the Magic of Misho (Audio Antiquary)

Yes, I know what you mean but you didn’t compare to the most likely competition for superior bass.

these are superior to anything in weight I have heard and integration of bottom half to upper range making it the most coherent. I don’t consider corner horns anything more than room compromises and they are a solution if like Peter you have a 15x16 living room where you want to get the most of your living room combining it with audio. Competitions for those are vintage tannoys, AN-E, and in modern speakers audionec evo 2, I prefer the audionec more.

Altec 817 and Leif’s and a couple of other dual FLH I heard are all out speakers requiring space availability and to excel over anything else there is no competition except with other similar models

Unfortunately not. Still probably 4-6 wks away.
Sold my old ones though.
Don’t be shy with the iphone when they are up and singing , I am quite looking forward to viewing and hearing them :D

I wont be, but based on my previous experience they also take at least 200-300 hrs of burn-in

Vintage Tannoy and Audio Note AN-E are not competition for good corner horns…sorry no way. Tannoys are sluggish and colored and AN-E just far off the mark dynamically…not even close.

that’s a difference in sound you are talking about. I am talking about consideration compromise balance. I don’t like AN E myself but that’s separate point. Neither of these are all out designs, they are things people should consider if speakers have to be put in corners

my dual JBL 2220B FLHs now operate from 550 and down to 65
below that the FL 21" 4m 1 fold sub horn

Thing is anyone can add bass or highs not coherent with the rest, or close the cabinet with a big woofer inside to get boom boom bass. Dual FLHs allow for the most seamless integration of the lower end through the midbass to the upper range sounding open and natural without the closed cabinet sound. Apogees would do that with the midbass but dual FLHs can do that might with the nuance of SETs backing them.

No I am talking about vastly superior bass quality and dynamics…only ultimate extension is somewhat truncated.

I have spent time listening to the Fyne F12 speakers which I understand were developed by a group of former Tannoy folks who wanted to advance Tannoys classic coaxial tech. They produce impressive deep bass and with the right amplifier outstanding bass texture. They are also quite efficient,, but IMHO come alive in the bass with a fast and nuanced solid state amplifier vs. a low wattage tube amplifier. I imagine they may not do what a well executed corner horn does but are quite respectable for a more traditional room placement design.

Ok, you haven't heard any good dual FLHs from your posts on the forum (in fact none documented) so fine if you think so. Anyone can get macro dynamics and bass by closing the cabinet.

I have heard Fynes. They have no similarity to vintage Tannoys. Tannoys changed a lot over their life of 70 years or so, even newer Tannoys have very little similarity to older models except for looks. The current folks who are alive probably weren't there when the quality Tannoys were produced - their dads were

Bonzo, I have not heard Tannoy's so it's good to hear of your experience there. I did however have several hours listening to our amplifiers at a client's with the Fyne's and thought them to be impressive in a number of regards.

You are correct about my lack of experience with FLH loudspeakers. I was not making the argument that dual FLH's are not the cat's pajamas when it comes to bass as I imagine they are. I will however make it my business to hear some so I can contribute to such discussions more in the future. Do you know of a friendly WBF US based member in the Southern California or New York Tri State area where I can experience them and report back?

I am talking about corner horns vs. Tannoys and Audio Note AN-E, not FLHs, which technically corner horns and the lines of JBL Paragon are. You said they’re just different and both compromises. I was disputing that not about the FLH types you are talking about. Btw. I have heard similar speakers a number of times as well as single woofer FLHs from Altec. I would not consider them superior to a well executed Klipsch type folded corner horn

Single woofers aren’t the same and there are tons of bad sounding Altecs. That’s the case with lots of vintage and DIY
