Then there's the brands that use the names of Greek & Egyptian gods to name their products like: Thor, Zeus, Isis, Osiris, Oracle Of Delphi, ect..
Agreed. As a someone whose ancestry is 100% Greek I want to share in this faux outrage of being offended by mere words and names that don't affect my life in any way.
I remember growing up when we were taught "sticks and stones....".
Cultural appropriation if the sincerest form of flattery. There are much more dire and threatening things toward which one could direct one's angst.
I'd go one step further - cultural appropriation is a made up fake issue by people who have run out of things to be triggered over.
Is it cultural appropriation when restaurants offer "gyro" sandwiches who aren't Greek? No.
Is it when Olive Garden pretends to be Italian? No.
Is it when an actor pretends to be something they are not when they......act? No.
Is it when fraternities hold toga parties? No.
Is it when a college team names itself Trojans (or even worse - condoms?). No.
The USA was BUILT on the blending and mixing of cultures and beliefs. And that's the entire concept of emigration worldwide. People need to stop being so desperate for fake problems in this world. There are plenty of real ones.
Shunyata got it all wrong with with the Everest 8000 conditioner. It should have been the Shunyata Qomolangma 8848. They'd have sold a bunch of them.

It was originally called the Precision Optical Instruments Company Ltd, which was a bit of a mouthful, so they went for the most garden variety, mother of all deities, the Bodhisattva Kannon, or Canon for the shortest transliteration. The Indian version is Avalokitesvara, which would not work at all. The Tibetan version was famous for the Sanskrit mantra, om mani padme hum. It is probably appropriate to audio as it's all about seeking perfection.
The entire Schiit brand is appropriated from Norse mythology.

I used to drive a Pontiac. My mower had a Tecumseh engine. It was a good engine. I buy Land O' Lakes butter. I'm a retired Chief Engineer. I grew up in Indiana.
I respect these brand names and our language borrows from many other languages. I see it as a rich cultural texture and a way to keep the memories of these great cultures and people alive. Everyone should be proud of their heritage. It's the weird uncle whose name is mentioned in a whisper that we all shirk.

This got me wondering - who is more upset? The Texans or the Mexicans with the merging of the food and naming it Tex-Mex?
...one person's homage is another person's "appropriation" it seems.

I love Tex-Mex. I also love Italian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, German, and French food... English- ehh, well I love their Fish and Chips.
I didn't mean local restaurants (except for Tex-Mex) but the food in each of those countries. Middle East cuisine is also excellent. In fact, I have not been to a place where the food wasn't good (stick to the Fish and Chips) in the 42 or so countries that I have visited. People everywhere love to eat and take pride in their cooking.
I actually find food in Seattle to sort of suck. These big name chefs make it too fatty, salty and rich. Just too much. I can't eat it without feeling bloated and on the verge of having it come back up.
We use to have good mexican. Even that is giving way to either americanized crap or too fatty with bad for you seed oil.
And my favorite BBQ closed.
