What is the best speaker you have ever owned ?????

Acoustat Spectra 6600s Price in 1991 = $6,500.00

Soundlab A-1PX,s price in 2012 = $35,000.00

Of course i know that if Acoustat's where made today they would cost much more than $6,500.00 but i'm going with the price that it cost my friend for his modified all steel frame plus all special parts and bybee mods these monster 600 pounds speakers would hold their own against the Soundlabs FOR THREE TIMES LESS MONEY now dollar for dollar wich one would you choose ?????

would love to hear the latest Ultimate Sound Labs

Panels don't lack bass wack , apogee's had such in spades decades ago. What they lack is percussive energy from the upper mid bass thru the mid - high frequency range is the main culprit. Drum snares, steel weight, horn blast , et al , is where it's most pronounced vs dynamic speakers ...

Regards ,

interesting...

Extrapolated from its 1991 price point and the fact they're Very labor intense to build , plus market position , et al ...

At that price point and by Mr A 's standard Maggie's win ..:)

We are speculating...yet, Magnepan kept their prices almost the same: the 20.7 is not that much expesnie than the 20.1 why would the Acoustat? The present High End Audio prices is sustained by a market that is willing to pay the asking price .. Nothing wrong with that but please don't invoke Labor intensity and cost to manufacture to justify these prices

Franz,
I cant discard working knowledge , name another who has the same prices as Magnapan over the last decade or two. Were maggies 6500 in 91 , were they considered top notch then , now ..? Maggies are also a lot cheaper to produce compared to acoustats , which is similar to soundlabs ....

Based on these factors and market niche , i would speculate on the prices being closer to soundlabs than Magnapan ...

Exactly ... Magnepan could have invoked the same rational and bring higher prices .. They chose not to... The rational is just tenuous the cost can be high in some items but it can't justify the stratospheric prices ...

Err No,

Magnapan could not survive an increase of that magnitude on their 30 yr old designs , it would require a completely new and much improved speaker to be competitive at the 30K price point. Maggies sell because of their price( 1.7/3.7) to performance ratio.

There's a reason for 20.1 -20.7 the .6 is the % of improvement ...:)

I love when someone speculate with all the air of a fact ...

We routinely see amplifiers using century-old technology selling for more than $100K. ... From time to time the Odd idler Pulley Turntable fetches over 10K .. Plasma Tweeters (How old is that technology itself ) figure foremost as the most expensive around .. There are more examples ..
So the 30 years old technology of the Maggies seems weak .. Don't you think? ...

Repeating myself: there is currently scant correlation between cost and price in High End Audio.

As some one referred to SoundLabs and I have intermittently owned SoundLabs during 25 years and still own a pair of A1 Px, it is fair to say that any comparison with the production cost of the 1990 A1 and the current A1 PX is not meaningful. The only thing they have in common is the shape, wood frame and functional principles - all else is different. Old A1s were artisan speakers, stators were made from wood, membranes were coated at the factory and common high voltage wires were used. Modern A1 Pxs have high technology stators and membranes, more elaborated high-voltage distribution systems, higher voltage switching supplies and much better quality crossovers. And yes, they sound much better!

If price is your guide... Incidentally, you are wrong about the price of A-1PXs... Whatever...
My ears are my guide...I could sell anybody else's electrostats...
Other people came by today and listened for hours...Holst The Planets on UHQR was nonpareil...

Meawhile Magnapan has re-vamped.. (Cosmic silence ) ...... :)

Franz,

The amp analogy in your last response does not apply , we are discussing two specific companies , i gave my reasoning as to why , seeing that Magnapan passed critical mass like 20 yrs ago , i will ask you for an earthly guess , what do you think Magnapan production cost is on a Pr of 3.7 's .....

What would the top of the line spectras sell for today ....?

Regards.....

Mr. Acoustat.
I don't think anyone thinks these two are comparable speakers.

IMO The Sandersoiundsystem is the ultimate in full range electrostatics hybrids. Soundlab Dynastats is next.
