Didn't like Tacet, own a few of them. Performances not good either
Some are good, some are not...I own three and they are all pretty decent. Not world class performances but solid and the sound quality is quite ok.

Just an Iphone 7 at this time. I have it set to HD60 mode. I have a much better recorder but the file sizes are prohibitively large to get them uploaded online (they are 24/96khz...I could do 16/44 but it woudl be audio only).

Now for something different:

This is video of my ex-girlfriend playing Paganini Caprice Nr. 5. She is playing in Tonhalle Zurich Kleinersaal (small hall...not really small but compared to the large one better for solo or small ensemble concerts). This is just one of 24 that she played solo in the same concert and all from memory. The violin is a Stradivarius that at the time (15 years ago) was valued at over $4M...probably worth more now. The video was made (not by me) on a fairly high end (for the time) Sony Handycam. So keep in mind that this is the built-in microphone on the handycam and then recorded through my stereo with an Iphone 7. Lot's of steps along the way, including compression algorithms and poor microphones on both ends of the recording playback capture. This is what I got to hear daily at home for 4 + years and was a hell of a lesson in violin sound.

She only had this violin for this concert series (4 concerts in 4 cities) and her standard violin was a Guadagnini that at the time was valued at around $1M (I saw the insurance policy).

20. Antonio Stradivari, The "Joachim" (1714)
21. Antonio Stradivari, The "Monasterio" (1719)
22. Antonio Stradivari, The "Madrileno" (1720)
23. Antonio Stradivari, The "Rode" (1733)
24. Gasparo da Salo (c1570-80)
25. Carlo Bergonzi, The "Constable" (1731)
26. Josef Guarneri del Gesu, The "Gibson" (1734)
27. Josef Guarneri del Gesu, The "Lafont" (1735)
28. Josef Guarneri del Gesu, The "Plowden" (1735)

Agreed their recordings are smoothed out, lack dynamics and bite! Generally speaking I don't care for most audiophile labels, to me many exist to do destructive things to the music.

They marketed themselves under the guise of tube recordings like the old, but turned out pretty fake sounding, including the qualities you mention plus compressed. Please no one ask what is fake sounding

Doesn't change the fact that the TAcet cd with the different violins shows pretty obviously the difference in sound between these instruments, which was of course the point of the videos and the thread...not whether or not you or David think Tacet is a good sounding record label...

Have you heard any of Ed Pong's more recent recordings on tape? You'll get a very good idea of what a Strad vs Guarneri sounds like. Especially if you listen with Stax headphones.
