A Visit to Mik Bhavnani - Unique Audio UK

I do have the Micro seiki 8000 mk1 and 2 plus a Thorens reference plus quite a few more but space is at a premium, there a couple met 927. the Nakamichi TX 1000 pioneer 3a the Kenwood plus more.Together with many many other decks. I have a Kondo ginga still in its crate and a brand new shin do 301 turned up last week.

There are quite a few more Rockport turntables 2 more system 111's and all the versions of the 11 and the capella's in all variations. I don't like like foils without satellite conductors personally.

I bet you don't have the transfi salvation rim drive and the terminator air bearing arm in your collection

I don't believe Mik does. But he's heard it, and commented to me he really likes what it does. Good to have a thumbs up from someone w such a breadth of experience.

I usually don't participate, but do enjoy reading.
Ked, that was way too easy.
But very funny.
Over and out.

Is there a deck you don’t have but long for? Something that you’ve just never been able to get your hands on?

will need some time to reflect

Got one for you Mik.
The Lumenwhite Mystere tt.

Forget it Bill.
I emailed them multiple times, no response.

Maybe that was because I said I was Ked from WBF with a long and honourable history getting my chequebook out for fine tts.

Mik, your thoughts on it?

It was interesting but not too my liking overall had a great midrange.

I am slipping If I could I would get the Verdier Magnum but only a couple ever made. I tried to get them to build me one recently but no chance.

That Magnum really looks quite something.

Does Bill's suggestion, the Disc Rotator, exist?
I never could get an answer.

I am afraid it will ejaculate and make an oily mess one day. The Magnum I mean.

And out of all these tables you have found the big Rockport is the best overall? Would be curious to hear your informal ranking of the top 5.

I have tried long to get Mik to rank outside his bespoke stuff. To summarize, if it is a turntable or related, it is worth owning. He likes all tables. That is his issue.

His other opinion is that no table is perfect, so you need many

He once told me "you are asking the wrong person. I like them all"

You are his spokesperson?

Brad, analog fans love all tts like parents love their kids. Some might be kids that are badly behaved and so challenging to adore, others great at school and make you proud.

Walk into any room with a tt in it, and you'll always ask it to be put on.

So I can totally see Mik loving all tts, but only holding onto a few he believes can be wrangled to near perfection.

Spot on I admire them all but would not want to listen to all. if i stop admiring they out I got rid of an entire line up recently and do not regret it. I admire them in different ways indeed.

A lot comes down to system, arm and cartridge and what one is trying to achieve. For me the Rockports are the the ones I love the most but have spent the last 26 years understanding them and understanding how to get the best out of them I have heard them sound not so inspiring in the incorrect set up and with the wrong cartridge and even tonearm cable. I would never ever try and use this deck with any lyra it needs awell fleshed out cartridge.

I would not urge any one just to own one there are many factors. And some turntables works obtain the best out of a particular cartridge like the Vyger which is s a superb turntable it has real scale across the frequencies and is able to get the most of the Red sparrow more then a majority of others. Not every deck and arm will suit every cartridge and its about finding a balance.I would recommend the Vyger in a flash to any one.

For me the Cs port is a superb turntable it crates a large sound field with superb air and space fantasic midrange it has good bass which is quite a feat maybe not the most controlled compared to the best idlers etc but very seductive with great detail.

The Alba with the mysterious platter is jaw so so musical its a deck that can draw you in its seductive it needs alot of care with set up but is actually well thought out. The alba has a natural sence of bloom that is uncanny with a nice sence of detail maybe not as much as the cs port but to truly incredible.

The blue pearl is a tricky one its quite finiky needs the right arm and cartridge it can go into extremes can be one fast and dynamic and next slow and ponderous. It gets alot out of the sme 3012r like not many do for some reason is quite something is the way it does nuance and micro detail it does not get in the way of things and if wants a large impactful presentation the Airtangent does sound stage and width like no other.

I like the chrome sme and airtangent it removes all the negatives of the sme and concentrates on the positives its a little dark horse very very satble sounding combination its pitch stability is superb serious grip and on say a solo violin it is one of the best out there but ones system needs a bit of colour to do it justice.

The kodo beat with the air tangent has superb drive its quick not the warmest but superb micro detail.

The big systemdek reference has to get a mention its so underrated its big and plush comes out and hugs you its a serious turntable but very un know its for someone whos had enough of the chase.

Mik, it was a total joy to talk to you when I did, topped off by what to me was a totally unexpected thumbs up from you for my choice of tt and arm. I really was heartened by that. I've obv not approached even 0.1% of the effort you've put into your passion/vocation, but I've gone the extra mile into maybe the most tricked out version of the Trans Fi setup, and I cannot easily imagine swapping out for anything else. Your words backed up my positive feelings for what 6 years of ownership incl 3 years of major mods has resulted in.

So many uber specialists in this hobby are inspiring in their quest and results, but remain unfriendly and non inclusive. I can honestly say your enthusiasm and respectful comments re other professionals and other tts is rare at yr exhalted level.
