AlsyVox Botticelli with external crossovers

Christoph, fantastic report, you really conveyed the experience. Can you elaborate a bit on what you meant by files v Tidal v Qobuz?

Do you mean ripped cds v streaming? How was the initial comparison? And the two streaming services?

Do the Alsyvox have good bass for rock/electronic music? My current Magicos produce low bass accurately, but as as sealed box design they lack the mid-bass hump of ported speakers that makes rock/electronic fun.

They certainly can do rock and electronic music. We checked for example with Ricardo Villalobos Re:ECM recording and a deep house track (forgot the title) which sounded great. If your primary focus is that type of music though, imho there are better alternatives. Most definitely you will not get an unnatural mid-bass hump if that is what you are looking for. The bass you are getting is fast, clear, articulate and deep, they move a serious amount of air!

Marc, we compared the same track as digital download from the Extreme's hard drive vs Tidal vs Qobuz. We looked for the ones which appeared to be from the same master and ofc no remasters or reissues or sampling rate differences or such. For me it was to be expected that HD vs streaming did display differences, what I did not expect was the relatively big difference between Tidal and Qobuz (with Qobuz usually being better). What I also did not expect was that those differences varied over time.

Christoph, maybe the system was so consistently good that it achieved the trick of delineating the differences to start which then morphed into total enjoyment of all three playbacks thus minimising the downside of any contrast.

You could certainly think so, I prefer to think that this system lets you find those differences easily if you want to but also lets you completely enjoy the music again if you want to. Therefore I consider the system equally as an evaluation and development device AND also an enjoyment bringer.

Christoph, I've now heard three planars, all ostensibly flat to 20Hz.

Apogee Duettas and Divas, both hugely modded.

Analysis Audio Omegas, crossover modded.

All three were HUGELY different in the bass, more than most box spkrs and horns I've heard.

The Duetta I've heard takes the prize imho for most convincing home reproduction in low frequencies, only beaten by an OB framed spkr using twin 18" woofers per side in isobarik loading fashion.

The Divas were great, but flawed.

The Omegas were so flimsy low down that they didn't compete with a bookshelf spkr.

To equal the Botticellis air displacement you would need 4 long stroke 15” woofers each side (9000 cm3).

I have just now reached my one year anniversary of ownership of the Botticelli playing in a 17ftX35ftX9ft room. Prior to owning these I owned the Gamut RS7i floor standers in the same room.
Both speakers are rated to go down to 22hz. The Gamut's surely exhibited power in the lower region (two fast 7 inch bass drivers) but also reflected to the corners a lot more.....best requiring treatments and requiring a lot of current for control.
The Alsyvox bass is much more seamless and plays with the rest of musical spectrum way better and much less colored in my room and other rooms I have heard them in. It simply sounds bigger in reach and much more open.
I have never felt short on bass performance with the Botticelli but for me the attention goes to how complete, seamless, extended, dynamic and open the music is rendered.
However with that said, I think bass performance is subjective as is any listening preference, so the real way to know is to visit one of the dealers with your desired music (like Rhapsody or Emile) and find out if your needs are met.

Why Qobuz nearly always sounds better than Tidal, and the differences get smaller at night is one of the puzzles we are working on

Another puzzle, is that certain countries seem to have consistently better streaming SQ than other countries

We don’t think it’s nationalist expectation bias

Nationalist Expectation Bias...sounds like a political party Lol.

A cone woofer can manage +/- 7.5 cm displacement in some cases. The Alsyvox +/- 1cm and at that displacement will hit the frame.

So no, not really.

A Duetta panel is about the equivalent of 3 12 inch woofers and can manage about 7mm towards the magnets.

For both the Alysyvox and any all ribbon Apogee, dynamic drivers will play louder. Considerably so.

Surely you must mean a 15mm xmax ? If it can move 15cm its some sort of crazy car subwoofer, at any rate not something you will find in a low distortion audiophile speaker.

Loads of info here.

Just trying to be realistic. The Alsyvox will play bass loud enough for most people. But not for some people who want very high SPL with tracks containing copious amounts of bass.

Its just reality. It doesn't mean they aren't fabulous speakers.

A Wilson Thor's Hammer seems to do +/- 20mm. I am surprised it's not more TBh but yes they do get less linear the longer the throw.

If the Thor’s Hammer woofers have a xmax of 40mm a pair could indeed move the same amount of air as a pair of Botticellis. How that would “feel” I agree on to being completely subjective. I can only directly compare to the Focal Utopias with 2 11” woofers each. I did own a pair of Rel Gibraltar G1 subwoofers prior to the Focals but they did not add anything to those so I sold them. I have even briefly owned a pair of Wilson XS subwoofers but never got around to installing them in my room, too big, too heavy :)

I too am supporting my 2-way horns with 2 Ripol subs built by the inventor himself in a stereo configuration, although with 4 12" chassis in total. Still the result is not comparable to the ribbon bass.

The Alsyvox were the speakers that had more interest in listening. After reading this thread my interest has increased much more.
This year the Hifi Show was held in Valencia (after 6 years). I don't know why I was convinced that Alsyvox would exhibit there. Of course it was my mistake, but I was very disappointed when I saw that they were not.

You’ll have another chance to hear them in Munich High-End Show in May.
