Another Apogee thread? You bet!

The one thing hi-fi should tell you, if you really enjoy it, is to buy real instruments and learn how to play them.

No reproduction issues involved for acoustic instruments. Apart from better sounding instruments, of course.

Same problem, different thread.

There is no escape;)

Do you recall in your visit if he mentioned the crossover point for the Maggie Ribbon Tweeter? The Maggie Ribbon Tweeters are crossed over ( I believe) at 3 K in their designs ( 20.7, 3.7i), however if pushed hard they frequently will blow fuses, or the actual Ribbon will just fail.
Since the Analysis Ribbon is used as a “filler”, and their tweeter isn’t to bad on its own, I would guess he could get away with a much higher crossover point. This would allow the “System“ to play much louder, and stress free and eliminate the fuse/Ribbon section used with the Maggie Ribbons from failing.
I don’t recall what he said. He did tell me, but I forgot. The system could play very loud and very clear. So many tweaks in that system I couldn’t keep track.

I’m still breaking in my TSW Duetta Ultimates, but my impression so far is WOW . I can see why so many audiophiles have a memorable Apogee experience to convey. These speakers are shocking in their authority and presence. They fill in the frequency gaps left vacant by the Stages. They seem to defy physics in their ability to reproduce thunderous bass. It is downright startling. My Scintillas were lovely, but didn’t pack the punch that the Duetta Ultimates pack.

Apogees can absolutely be utterly awe-inspiring

I really would like to have a pair of FullRanges one time but they are huuuuge, extremely heavy and dauntingly complex to be driven properly

Never stopped you before ;)
The FullRanges are another step more complicated than anything I have/had before.

I would say the FRs are triple the effort and at least four times the complexity over the Scinnies

Thanks.

Everyone's experience is different, but I never did like classical anyway, and as I said they will sound great with great recordings no matter what the genre.

Alan, what you can't appreciate because you never knew the difference is those bass clamps you have.

You are very lucky. Trust me. That upgrade was massive.

Hi everyone. I have a pair of Duettas ultimates built by TSW. built a few years ago and have at most 100 hrs on them.
Unfortunately I'm selling and downsizing my system.
If you were considering buying a pair you can save several thousand if you'd like mine. I'm not giving them away.
Message me if truly interested.
Also selling a pair of Classe Omega Monoblocks (not Omicron)
And a CAT SL1 Legend Black Path (most recent before the latest extremes)

Thx

Courier will pick them up and bring them back to the homeland.

Considering the price of current production planar magnetics...

Hi everybody,

I recently found a pair of Caliper Signatures at a local hifi store at a very good price. They had sold this very pair pair new, back in the day, and got this as a trade in.

The cabinets were painted and everything looked fine, except the sound was awfully dull, no treble at all. Tried the hi/med//low knob but only minor differences still dull at all positions, tried changing tow in/out and inclination also no help. Jumpers cables ext...

Definitely not the sound i remembered from the late 90s with the Krells and Wadia combinations i was familiar with back then.

What can be the problem? I was interested in building a small system at my summer house.

Th picture is from the ad, but not the system i heard it (the actuall systme was Musical Fidelity pre /power M6, Metronome C/Aqwo dac).

Is there something i can do to get this fixed or should i skip?3765360605.jpg

Did you put your ear up to the ribbon mid/tweeter to hear if they actually made sound?

Have you double checked the shorting bars are in place and/or your jumpers between the MRT and Woofer inputs? The two sets of speaker inputs must be connected by one of the two.

Yes and yes, this audition is at a hiend shop. We even used hiend jumpers.

Do you think it is a crossover issue or a matter of the magnets gone bad after all these years? or something gone wrong with the disassembly to get painted?

The shop wants me to buy them, and i should go to Analysis for service and repairs. (I am situated in Greece so Analysis is very close by)

I would like them to have them serviced first but they assume that i should buy first and then have them serviced.

I think i must skip but the price is really good, even if i should add some repair and maintenance costs, but at least don't you think they should accommodate me with that?

Magnets don't “go bad.”

In short, if they don't sound good, don't get them unless you're willing to spend whatever it may cost to fix them.

Whether spending that money is something you want to do or not, only you can answer - but do you want to take that gamble?

Yes my friend, i am very long time in the game, i asked here if someone had had dull sounding Apogees, and if someone knew what it is beforehand.

If someone told me: yea i know what the problem is, it is this and that and it may cost you so much i would consider.

Since this is not a common problem, of course i will not take the risk.

The question is when a reputable shop does a trade in and then resells the items shouldn't they fix it and then make a price for a properly working item?

The price is irrelevant, the principle is of importance.

Never mind.

The fact that the shop wanted you to buy them, then have them repaired was a huge red flag to me; of course any store selling a trade-in should make sure it is in proper running order first, otherwise you may as well buy a pair on eBay.

Personally, I'm staring at a pair of Caliper Signatures right now, they're the speakers for my bedroom system but I purchased them new in 1993 and they were redone with Graz ribbons in 2010.
