Usually it is not the wood that gives a particular sound character, but the varnish that is applied. Every highender knows C 37 varnish, which is violin-making varnish and determines the resonance behavior significantly.

Go to a lumber store and have 8 wooden cubes cut to size and then sand them smooth. Take 4 unpainted as feet for the device and 4 with c37 paint and let them dry for 2 days. Then listen to them in comparison and I can tell you there is a big difference in the sound. It is best to use a nice wood, e.g. cherry or walnut.
