Burmester 911 mk3

microstrip

I don't think I heard the MKII .. I am very familiar with the MK1 and of course the MKIII I can tell you there are differences but they are not of the proverbial audiophile "night and day"... I think the midrange is more luscious in the MKIII and the dynamics already stupendous with the MKI are even more so... The Burmester sound is "Big" with real wide dynamics and a potent , very potent bass the equal of the best you've heard... The MKi had hat bass .. You are familiar with Krell and their low end think Krell reach and solidity with Goldmund nimbleness (Mimesis 9 if you remember this amp) ... I would think the MkII should be in between and give you a taste of the MKIII..

How the Burmester 911 MK3 amp would compare to some Pass Labs (Aleph series perhaps) amps?
Thank you very much. :b

Sound wise, I am not experienced enough to say, but on looks, hands down 911 MK3. WTF are with those Pass Labs meters?

Burmester sound is neutral and natural; Pass sound is too warm and colored. This at my ears.

i have trialed the Goldmund Mimesis 6 sometime ago as a loaner amp while my Gryphon Antileon was in for repair...that was an eye-opener. Incredibly good treble. That in fact was what led me to investigate (and eventually buy second-hand) the Gryphon Colosseum.

Honestly, there are many great SS out there. I was blessed to own Hegel, Chapter Audio and Symphonic Line, as well as the tubed OTL Graaf 100. My Burmester 911 MK3 has the virtues of all of them and then some.:)

the Pass Aleph is a few generations ago...and i will say that with system matching being important, this warmth is probably a good characteristic for the sound of other equipment of that generation (namely digital). I have a review of my X1/Grand Slamms from Martin Colloms...a long time ago...and he noted intially some slight hardening of treble...until he switched from digital to vinyl and it disappeared. He also noted during the digital playback, that he preferred using the CJ equipment of that time (also warm/colored). But with today's superior digital, i am glad that my CJ GAT is far more neutral/natural.

Ladies and gentlemen, I just joined the burmester club! Just ordered the mighty 808 and the 911 monos. Can't wait for them to arrive (about a month according to my local agent). I must say this thread has a lot to do with my decision to go for the burmesters. Thank you guys.

Cheers,
Thf99

Congrats!!!! That is really, really big news. The 808 and the 911 monos...mighty indeed! Pls post when you've got them nice and settled in! Enjoy!!

MarinJim,
The Graaf 100 is not an OTL - it has output transformers. But I has I have some past direct experience with it would love to read more details about comparison of its midrange with the 911.

Wow! Congratulations.

Great news!!! You will love them. I am happy for you.

Many thanks, Frantz and Rocco. Currently, I am using the SF Extremas (I've been using these for the past 15 years and am still very fond of them, visually especially). Sound wise, my current favorites are the Magicos Q series and the Tidals (even the cheapest ones are great!). Having said that, I still love my Extremas. I just hope that the burmesters will bring out the best in them. This will save me a lot dollars from acquiring either the Magicos or the Tidals.

Best regards,

Many thanks, Joe. You, among others, have been responsible for my decision to acquire the burmesters.:)))

Sorry, but you are so wrong. How do I know? Well, I owned owned one and am a friend of the then US Graaf importer Gary Kay. I sold it for a Chapter Audio amp.

Edit: my apoligies microstrip, it is a hybrid OTL.

""This system adds to the OTL configuration a transmission line transformer which shifts the tubes impedance from 36 / 72 ohm to 4 / 8 ohm."

You will not be disappointed. I am going from a stereo 911mk3 to factory mono 911mk3's. My monos should be here in a couple of weeks. I am pretty excited. I can not wait until you give your impressions of the new setup. I have the 077 w/ ext. ps and wonder how the 808 preamp compares. Were you able to demo Burmester?

Unfortunately, no, Joe. The dealer only has the 808, 911(stereo), 061 and the phono amp on demo. I'm sure the 077 is equally great sounding (though not as good looking to my eyes).
