Development Thread: Sigberg Audio Saranna - active floorstander

It's great to see Norwegian innovation in the audio industry (beyond ourselves of course :p)! There's a new startup called Egeland Acoustics that has impressed me with a refreshingly scientific approach to isolation feet. Through tests and measurements, we can see that they genuinely provide a significant reduction in transferred energy and vibrations.

That's why I've decided to use custom feet from Egeland Acoustics for Saranna! The reasoning is in part because I like the product, and in part because I think it's cool to help spread the word about another Norwegian audio company. All our products already have soft / decoupling feet, but not nearly as advanced or as precisely tuned as these!

Egeland acoustics offer a range of premade and also custom feet for both speakers and audio components. The website is only in Norwegian still (google translate probably works well enough though), but inquiries can be made directly to support@egelandacoustics.no.

In case anyone is wondering, we're not deviating from our focus on a scientific and functional approach. In other words, I’m not going to claim that these feet will make significant changes to the sound coming from the speaker. However, decoupling from the floor is always beneficial - and the Egeland feet also have a great look and feel – which isn’t unimportant in this price range.

Good isolation feet can offer indirect benefits, like in my own living room: Here, the situation involves wooden floors on the second floor, and I have a wooden staircase that can resonate if the floor vibrates too much. This disappears with soft decoupling, thereby reducing the practical distortion at high playback levels. :)

They have an interesting structure and feel, and flexes both horizontally and vertically when you squeeze it with your hand, but yet are quite firm and stable when used under the speakers. They are designed specifically for the weight put on them by the product, and measurements show how the vibrations are effectively reduced when the proper weight is applied. Here is how they look inside:

A couple of simple renderings while we wait for the real thing. I like how they look very different from the front as opposed to the back. :) The front is elegant and understated, while the back is all business.

Average of left/right in a normal living room, around 40m^2.
1/12 smoothing.
No EQ above 100hz.

20-200hz, could have been EQed flatter.

It's looking very good, esp ¬400Hz - daylight!
There's a strange suckout at around 240Hz -- room related?

Thanks! Yes that's the room.

This might be a bit interesting. I've removed below 200hz as that will necessarily vary quite a bit, and I've smoothed to 1/6th to easier see the overall trend and tonality. This is Saranna prototypes (averaged left+right for both measurements) in two completely different rooms.

Room 1 (green):
Around 40m^2 opening up to the left to another space, total maybe 60m^2. No real wall for several meters on either side. Decay around 400-450ms. 2.4m below ceiling.

Room 2 (red)
Around 18-20m^2, walls on both sides. Decay around 200-250ms. 2.1m below ceiling.

I'd say it's remarkably similar in overall response and tonality. It's also easy to recognize the sound signature and presentation of the speakers in both rooms. I've had traditional speakers in those two rooms as well in the past. They do to a much higher degree sound like two completely different speakers in these two rooms due to the room interaction.

Here is 20-500hz as well (1/12th), good extension in both rooms.

After further contemplating finishes, I think we will deviate from the pure white and pure black colors. As mentioned before the sides will be veneered, but the complementing paint choices will be bright and dark, not entirely white or entirely black. Current thinking (click to enlarge):
