* Did you watch a film last night (on Blu or DVD), and what was it? *

It's the same thing when listening to an album on rotation, or a music CD spinning. ...Most turntables and CD players don't remember where you left off last time. ...@ the movie theaters?
;-)
With music it's just not typically logical or desireable to start from a paused point, IMHO. OTOH with films, as 'ddk' points out, it can be a convinient and desirable feature.
TMK most CD players do remember its paused spot for a short period of time. Certainly silly to think of a TT to do the same. Even if I've paused a music disc, I rarely wish to continue from a paused point, anyway. I will either repeat the track, entire disc or go to a diff one. Same with an lp, if I've used the cue lever for some reason I would usually restart the track or entire lp. It's unnatural IMHO to restart a music track somewhere other than the beginning. But OTOH its quite logical to restart a film or paused TV episode from a paused point.

* 'American Sniper' is a Warner Bros BR title, and most FOX and Disney BR titles remember where you were last time, @ your mistress' apartment.
...Columbia too I believe. ...Universal and Paramount...I don't remember. ...Lionsgate and Criterion, I think so.

** When a film is over four hours long, for some of us, yes, that makes sense. ...Before I turn off my BR player, if a movie was unfinished viewing, I simply look @ the time. ...And I just wait for the same time two months later, or two days later...if I remember. But I could also write it down, on my cell.

:b ...Good morning Ron. ...Obviously my entire post was a humorous one. ...But maybe some ELP (laser turntables) can remember the spot where you last left off? ...Some LPs are readings, like books. ...Remember those? ...And books you can take all the time you need to read them.

I have never heard of a CD player that remembers the last spot where you stopped, and can take it from there next time. ...But who knows. Some CDs are readings like books too.

* Sure, music is usually listened in its totality; side of an LP, CD, etc. ...Analog LPs for sure, open-reel-tapes...ah, here it's different.
And CDs; not an important feature...that's why they don't include it.

** For movies, on DVD and Blu-ray; yes, that's a cool feature to have, as LOTR Extended Edition are running over four hours each of the movies from the trilogy, and there are others long running time movies, in the four hours plus neighborhood.

As for say a two-hour movie, or 90 mins, or 140 mins...if you truly are serious about your movie viewing experience, it doesn't differ much from the music experience.
...No cut, no stop, no bathroom break, no soda pop break...no break @ all...it's a one non-stop movie love affair. ...With music it can vary a lot from one tune to the next on the same CD (or LP). ...With movies you cannot do that, normally, ...like @ the IMAX theater. ...One very small miss and the film can take a totally different turn.
Interrupting a Blu-ray (or DVD) movie @ home because we are tired, and continue the rest the next day or two...is simply not the best way. Might as well start all over from the beginning. ...I think. ...But most of us we don't. ...And it is simply not the best correct way. :b

Without exploring all type of music and movies, but simply staying with the context of my reply; ...'American Sniper' by Clint Eastwood,...it's one movie without intermission. :b
And the same for 'Blood on the Tracks' by Bob Dylan. ...The album (LP) or music SACD/CD.

*** That feature where you stopped a film on Blu or DVD and the player that remembers where you last left off; it has to be embedded by the movie studios on their software. ...For compatibility with those DVD/Blu-ray players having that feature.

<<>> Anyway, like I said; my prior post (first quote above) was 100% humorous. :b

Directed by Guillermo del Toro ('Pan's Labyrinth'), was a cool flick. ...Not a masterpiece, and not a fiasco...something in it worthy.
My own score: 73.5 (includes the technical aspects as well...visuals and music score/sound effects). ...The film alone: 66.5

Yes Ian, all the time. ...The music is constantly playing here @ the sanctuary where I live.
I do listen to the radio a lot...Classical, Jazz @ Blues.
Every film I watch @ night has a music score in it.

My turntables are in my basement, with my albums, in a passive mode of nostalgia in their own boxes. But without playing they don't mean much anymore today in the now.
And several CD/SACD/DVD/BR players are spread over the main floor, and when in a specific inspired mood everything is ready quickly.
We all have our periods, we are all from various backgrounds and generations and habits.

We have music threads here @ WBF, but for the most part and time they remain inactive, very.
We don't usually post much there, we like more posting in threads that have polls and discuss audio matters...all.
And the music is always playing when I post, discuss in audio/video forums...not matter how much money and experience and my social status is in real physical life.
What counts is the spiritual life in balance with the physical one...harmony, fulfillment, awareness.

On average per each day I'd say I listen to music (passive mode) for roughly twelve hours. ...Except for the days outside the sanctuary.
And on some days the music is playing for about sixteen hours.

This is very interesting that you asked because it's a very good question to all of us...how many hours a day are we listening to music on average?
And if not home, when driving, riding, shopping, walking...are we the walkman type...with headphones music listening on the go?

You have a very nice hi-end sound system Floyd; how much time do you spend listening to music from it?

* When I posted my post (from your quote in the preceding page), I was sitting outside on my couch and jazz music was playing on the radio...Charlie Haden & Pat Metheny "Beyond the Missouri Sky" (got the CD too), and before that there was another tune with acoustic bass and trumpet...don't remember who was playing...but lovely and realistic coming from inside the castle. ...And before it was a classical radio station, with cello solo music...for roughly half hour. ...Gorgeous music.

@ this moment right now I am listening to the birds, and to the young lady across the field teaching horse riding to the teenager girls. ...A moment of peace and quietness where I feel completely and comfortably numb. That quietude of exhaled peace is also part of my music ritual...and among the music I love playing...thinking of the children and the sun.

What I love most about life on this planet is peace, freedom, and all the people on it. ...And music listening & playing.
... R.I.P. Andre, Bruce, Rene, Irene, Geraldine, Jean, Dad, ...

We all pick our hobbies because we feel good...I picked music and nature. ...Among many other things, and they are all part of what we truly are. ...Inside and outside.
I don't listen to music actively like I used too, but I'm good with that, I accept transformation from another perspective.

So yes, the answer is for several hours a day the music is continually playing, and I only watch TV for about two hours a day on average...a Blu-ray movie late @ night.
...And you Ian?
The HIest FI is just that, listening to nature and watching the day go by. After I get settled in Seattle I would love to experience nature's Hi-fi on your deck, maybe a Liga Privada T52 and some BT Eagle Rare to spin the time and some lies.

One of my favorite recordings is a record from the environments series called Wind In The Trees, been listening to it for 30 years and it takes me far away every time. Just a HQ recording out in the woods.

If I am not talking to someone music is always playing around me, on one source or another, 2 channel, cans, buds, car, bluetooth or watching a movie, it's all part of the music experience.

Ian, I am in the same boat. It must be Magico's fault. I have had my S5s 15 months now, and I can't tear myself away from them on Friday/Saturday to watch a movie. I start, and then go back to the stereo. Last weekend I finally finished Jupitor Ascending after starting over for at least the last 5-6 weekends. :)

Haha, Bud, glad I'm not alone!

Last night I revisited this ::

63449_large.jpg

? Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore ('The Legend of 1900', 'Cinema Paradiso', 'The Best Offer'); it is a great film, of artistic sensibilities and sensuality...visually ? and musically ? .
...A great piece of cinematic hors-d'oeuvre.
If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend, very. ...Not only for the beauty of Monica Bellucci, but also for the beauty of the Music, ...and all.

? Score: 92 (artistic creation, composition...camera, people/actors/cameos, locales, ...music score by Ennio Morricone).

Just listen to it ^ without even looking. ...Then look, and keep listening. :b

Life is short, we're not immortal. ...So we make the best out of it...something useful. ...In the world we live in, planet Earth, success is often measured by what we have...how much money and assets/material possessions...a company we founded with a good product(s). ...And it usually attracts respect. ...And with money we can balance things out...bring water, food, shelter, medicines to the people who are dying every day on this planet...from famines...from natural disasters...from unnatural ones...wars...and from all the things that we are not even aware of. ...We do what we do from what we believe in and from what we can and cannot do.

Why this introduction before mentioning the last flick I watched? ...Because we're all driven differently and similarly @ the same time in our professional jobs and hobbies.
Each and every music recording and film has a particular emotional impact for each and everyone of us; good, bad, and between.

This is the world of entertainment, and for many of us life is entertainment. ...Happy entertainment, and sad entertainment. We go through the full gamut of emotions between happiness and sadness.

________

? Last night I revisited this flick, on DVD! ...Yes, from the DVD, with inferior picture and sound quality. ...I just didn't have any choice; it's not on HD DVD.

158Fire_In_The_Sky_cstmDVDv2.jpg

'Fire in the Sky'

I love that flick (1993), based on a true story (lie from 1975). I recommend, very. ...And investigate too; it's fun to learn about the human condition on Earth.
- My score (film's content and DVD technical aspects): 69

I watched this in the last couple nights (two flicks on one BR disc) ::

99148_large.jpg

1. Directed by Robert Siodmak (1946) --> That's thee one ... score: 96
2. Directed by Don Siegel (1964) --> A very good adaptation ... score 89

Overall (for this BR title; on every aspect): 92.5

* Last words: My reviews were brief, very. ...That's because it's windy today, on the veranda under the umbrella.
But don't worry...it is fine time @ the movies from memory lane back alley. ...If your mood is slowly drifting towards the 40s and 60s, I don't see how you can go wrong with these two flicks. ...Kill one bird with two stones. ...The expression, not in reality. ...Aim high, aim right. Movies are a part of history; they reflect the visions of filmmakers in certain periods of our historical culture with the technologies and the jazz of that time period...it's an interesting education, a cultural one. ...The art of cinema, & the scientific history of it.

I revisited an old favorite from Luchino Visconti (1963), and starring Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon ::

10495_large.jpg

Camera work, shot's composition, vistas, decors, lushness, actor's interaction, musical movements...all in perfect sync and harmony.
Overall rating score (everything): 99 ...A Masterpiece in my own cinema book.

* There are three running versions of this film; one @ 205 mins, another @ 185 mins (the one I watched), and the butchered USA version @ 161 mins (also present in this 2-disc BR title).

Last words: Most highest recommendation, essential viewing.

I am a huge Michael Mann's fan...so I watched that one last night.

* A different departure for sure...into the cyber sacred space. ...You need patience for this one, very. ...But it pays off with his usual signature on the key scenes; love and action/violence. ...Mann is an explorer, and this fits the 2015 world.

This film didn't receive good reviews, mainly because people were expecting, and not accepting the direction.

Overall, my own take...on the Blu-ray technical aspects and on the film itself: 77 (out of 100). ...The film itself: 66 ... and technical aspects...camera and music: 88

I know that I will revisit because it demands total attention; to every word and every small detail. ...The overall atmosphere is still Michael Mann, and that's a very good thing...with some amazing photography (camera shots) and the realistic action scenes...pure adrenaline. ...And the music is so subtle on this one...I love it.

Last words: Give it a chance...because this is Michael Mann. ...And the actor's direction...very him too...serious tone with serious emotions. ...It might not rock your boat the same it did with me, but that's why movies are entertaining; they all have a different impact for different people.
Like in music, sometimes it is the background noise, the ambiance of the context that is the main essence of the main entree...the musician's inspiration from their surroundings and happenings in the captured moment. Blackhat is like that, and not all audiophiles and videophiles and music/cinema lovers are receptive to it.
It is not a masterpiece, far from that; it is a Michael Mann's vision..his vision...and our going along with it. It's like love; you jump right in and you become active, or you stay @ the sidelines in a passive mood with no lovemaking happening...and so is life in real life.

It don't matter what others say, it only matters what we do. ...And same with films; we go in or we get out.
I certainly recommend a viewing...and if like me you are a Mann's fan...it's no question...you buy the Blu...the best.

I revisited this film last night ::

92425_large.jpg

It is very very hot this year on the Island...we have never seen that before...and it's probably because of the "blob".
No rain for three months (one day only...few drops)...rivers and creeks and lakes are empty...almost (the lakes)...and cannot water our brown/yellow lawns.
Normally we never need AC in our homes, but this year is different...just like all cars and trucks and boats they should have...if you don't want to suffocate.

Anyway, why am I telling you this in a thread reserved to films? Because that's how it feels watching movies without AC.

* 'The Book Thief' is a great film...the music score is sumptuous...let the end credits rolling...you'll hear what I mean...but it is also present during the entire running time.
And the young actress, and her interaction with all the other great actors and actresses; is so charismatic and magic that you'd realize that's what movie magic is all about.
It is very well narrated (speaking voice), the audio is perfect, the picture also, and the story replayed value, if not suffocating in the heat and the mood is right, is top.

'Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation' is playing in some HDR theaters (dolby vision and dolby atmos) right now. Not everyone has such a theater equipped in their neck of the jungles.
So, short of that you can go to a regular (inferior) theater to watch Tom Cruise in MI:5.
Or, you can watch (or revisit) The Book Thief @ home from the HD Blu-ray (picture & sound).

<<>> Did you ever notice? When it's hot we usually think less and do less (physical activities). And we are more receptive to our environment...heat, ocean, nature, movies, music, ...Generally, because our main mental and physical activities are lesser so that are more emotionally influenced when doing other activities not requiring much work...music listening and movie watching. ...Anyway, that's my theory and feel free to supply your own, or ideas that might go into that direction, or against it. :b

The Book Thief ... overall score (everything, including the hot weather): 80 /// It's not Mad Max: Fury Road or MI5 type of action flicks; it's one for the sensibilities, more than the overloaded and out of this world's senses. It's actually based on a book, not a script.

Many members here @ AVS are sensible music lovers of very high caliber...and not particularly movie watchers...more music video concerts.
Well, 'The Book Thief' is an Opera, sort of, and a beautiful one @ that. Missing it is like missing a great musical score, with beautiful imagery as a bonus.
By now, can you tell how much I love it? ...But that's not the point...it don't matter how I feel about it...only thing that it truly matters is what it brings to you...the main essence...your own soul, ears and eyes.

Peace, Love & Freedom. ...I'm listening to classical music right now, from the analog radio, outside on my veranda, and with the wind blowin', from a remote controlled fan, medium speed. :b

Revisited, in 3D :::

27603_large.jpg

That's the Lions Gate Bridge, in Vancouver...the main attraction. ...And the rest of course...how to die in grand style, and in 3D. :D
...Mainly for the bridge that I'm very familiar with as I drove it many many times...in all kind of weather. ...Rain, fog, snow, ice, ...all. ...And the 3D.

Anyway, I still prefer the first one of the Series (out of five).
* My score (everything: technical and film value): 64

You guys have probably read or have heard of the red baron? ...This was filmed in 1966; I was feeling melodramatic with a touch of action/suspense/truth.

Good replay value, for the actor's performances and the vistas. ...It's a cool flick.
* Overall score: 80

? There are some camera shots with the actor's positioning/gestures that are first rate; the cameraman's viewpoint/angle is superb...grand style and simple @ the same time.
If you haven't seen it that's one you guys should relax and enjoy watching it. I have a strong hunch that you are all going to appreciate. ...even Gary (Protein).
Hey, a western with Tommy Lee Jones.

I'm a sucker for a western, period. Tommy Lee or not!

I had some spare time; I revisited this 3D Documentary :::

101038_large.jpg

I just don't know the member's level of 3D Blu-ray love here @ WBF, basically as not many share their viewing habits...but let me just say this anyway:
In this Documentary, The Art of Flight in 3D (it's only 80 minutes), everyone here is going to get something refreshing out of it. ...In 3D, very.

Overall score (adventure risk takers and 3D technical aspects, picture/cinematography/locales...and sound too): 96
