Doctor's Orders/The Listening Room And Home Theater Of Steve Williams

Thanks Rob

I have been so tempted to use TacT in a similar fashion as yours. My only reservation is from comments of those in thel know who suggest that although improvements will be gleaned it will come at the expense of the wonderful midrange that Lamm is so well known for. I am not prepared to give that up

Won't be tom'w, but I'll let you know what I hear. I'm pretty thrilled with what I get from my ARC/Sceana combo -- there's real magic in it -- so we'll see. I can tell you that putting Audyssey in front of the Scaenas kills the sound.

The Scaena system uses a DSP based xover/filter to the bass modules -- I'm told that there is RC built into the software of it -- down the road someone from Scaena will be by to configure it. That will likely be the best solution.

If that system was via Doctor's orders, can you fill out a prescription for me?

I wonder what my co-pay will be?

Very nice!

Given his reputation, he probably doesn't take insurance :)

Who needs insurance when the government will take care of you?

Thanks Rob

It may or may not destroy your midrange. If you ply me with wine, I will come out, bring my Tact 2.2XP, my PC and we will just give it a whirl. As they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained. And then YOU can decide, if in fact is messes with the midrange, whether the upside is worth it --- or not !!

I'll be on the next plane if I can get the government to pay for that prescription.
I will check the latest update on the health care plan and get back to you. :)

Here we go again. Steve's system need a TacT like I need a hole in the head. Fuggetabout it is all I will say as Steve and I have been over this countless times. Has anyone seen Steve's room response? I have and its so damn good that I seriously doubt a TacT will do much to enhance it in any meaningful way. The biggest problem is his current room is a bit of slap echo from the wall ceiling interface in the front left of the room. The TacT will not do a thing for that, whereas a few hundred dollars of Echobusters or padded wall treatment would cure the problem in a flash. I'll tell you, if I had midrange purity like Steve has, I wouldn't add a single piece of additional electronics to my system. By the way, I should mention, I am a devoted TacT user!

Awesome system Steve, congratulations! I am a fan of Lamms and wish I had space for ML3s. Ok, I'm lying ... more like I wish I could afford a pair of ML3s. lol

Love that Studer too.

What a beautiful system!! If you don't mind just one comment - replace the glass shelves in your home theater equipment rack with acrylic. Not any acrylic but cell-cast 1" acrylic.

A place like TAP Plastics should be able to cut you what you need. http://www.tapplastics.com/

Just try one sheet under your LAMM preamp power supply or the Playback Designs and let me know what you think.

All--

I had the pleasure of being hosted last night by Steve who graciously invited me over for a listen to his system after I concluded a business meeting in the area. I know the enclosed picture doesn't show anything new, but it was taken by my Leica M9 and 21mm Elmarit lens which became a discussion topic on all its own!

I own planar speakers (Apogee Acoustics Scintillas) which are a full-ribbon design (no dynamic speakers are present), so the dynamic presentation of Steve's Alexandrias were pretty eye-opening. We listened to several CDs that I am familiar with and I found myself smiling many times as a result of this dynamic presentation. Planar speakers simply have a more difficult time presenting performances the way Steve's system can. However (and especially since Steve encouraged me to give my full impressions), in soundstage depth I think planars can do a better job in creating the illusion of performers in space--especially dipoles like Apogees.

Another fun part of the evening was listening to a CD by some band called Infected Mushrooms which had a bass track that even challenged Steve's Gotham subwoofers--if not the foundations of his home.

Finally, Steve indulged me by playing one of my favorite Tape Project tapes, Thelonious Monk's Brilliant Corners. It really was brilliant. We both agreed tape remains transcendent as a format for listening enjoyment.

All in all, a wonderful time spent with a true gentleman and host. Thanks, Steve!

Very cool room , looks like a nice place to hang out and watch a movie /listen to music , on a very high level.

I love to see pulp fiction or the lord of the rings /harry potter on that screen , i reckon voices will sound awesome.

Steve

Have you moved the Gotham closer to the wall since the last time I visited? I thought they were closer to the main speakers ... Am I correct?

Steve, your room is a very comfortable and familiar place. And of course with those loudspeakers and all that gear, it is even more exalting.

What I mean is that for any Music and Cinema lover we are in familiar territory, even if we don't approach it by the smallest fraction.
Or should I have said 'Audiophile' and 'Videophile'.

What I see is a sanctuary for a better life, more enjoyment from this wonderful hobby in Sound & Picture.
That's 'What's Best' is all 'bout! :)
The Art of Entertainment on a High Level. ...And right at Home!

Bravo!
