For what it's Worth-Tesla

At this point I'd only own an EV as a toy. And I'd need to live somewhere that I could park it elsewhere that isn't the garage. There's too many fire bombs that have gone off and burned down homes etc. Even Porsche had one go up and torch a supercar business - which they're trying to keep it hush hush.
Yes EVs aren't for everyone. Funny a buddy of mine know I am looking at EVs and he said the same thing about fires.

Researchers from insurance deal site Auto Insurance EZ compiled sales and accident data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and the National Transportation Safety Board. The site found that hybrid vehicles had the most fires per 100,000 sales at 3474.5. There were 1529.9 fires per 100k for gas vehicles and just 25.1 fires per 100k sales for electric vehicles.

Can someone's house burn down due to an EV, sure. I'm sure gas fires happen as well, especially with people storing mowers, etc. in their garage.

Actually the only cars or gas powered vehicles I know of that catch fire in recent times is BMW had one that was still an electrical issue even though it was an ICE car.

The difference is that if my lawn mower caught on fire (which I've never heard of) it can be put out with water. Any vehicle with a battery big enough to make it move cannot. Those large EV/hybrid batteries don't go out until the reaction is spent.

Now that is news to me. I didn't realize ICE cars where that safe o_O. I guess the insurance companies/data have it wrong.

The statistics you posted are for fires in general. I'm talking about a car sitting doing nothing. The entire bulk ICE cars with fire issues have to be running. And they can be put out by just unhooking the baby battery. BMW is the only one that would just randomly sitting still doing nothing light up; to my knowledge.

Also Hyundai recalled cars. Tesla, Porsche, etc, are not. And again the Hyundai has to be running.

Yes I wanted to post the full picture of fires given that also counts. Also never heard of BMW sitting and then catching fire. Lucky in my 20+ years of owning BMWs I haven't had an issue. Fingers crossed it won't start now.

I think it was only one model that was popping up frequently online (maybe a couple?). I wouldn't feel unsafe with BMWs in general.

Hyundai I wouldn't touch, even though their ICE would be safe when parked not running.

they are safe but I would not have one in my garage if attached to my home must be 100 feet away for me. Again this is just my view and I don’t think it’s a thought for all. I wonder what Ins companies think lol.

I’ve flown Rc stuff for 20 years and batteries can go on fire. now imagine a battery the size of a car
At one time Tesla had a battery pack to be removed to repair it had not one but several smoke detectors in the battery tray what does this tell us
Lipo and the like burn very hot if the Chems inside get exposed to air
I’ve always wondered what happens in a car Accdent pics anyone ?

Clearly we all can site a case where an EV or ICE car has caught fire. I guess I should site all the times cars have caught on fire at a gas station while refueling. Isn't common, no but has it happened, yes. The same as an EV catching fire at someone's home.

Like I said EVs aren't for everyone. I'm sure during our lifetime you will be able to buy an ICE car.

Yes but there was a clear cause. Np vehicle should be the subject of spontaneous combustion.

Honestly I have never heard of any EV or ICE car out of the blue spontaneously combust. I have heard of EV electrical fires or ICE cars catching fire due to a gas leak and spark. The EV fires I have heard was due to faulty home wiring. Of course I have heard of home electrical fires that had nothing to do with cars.

Tesla for the common man [family].

Or at least via gov’t subsidy! This isn’t a sustainable model for the entire country and at some point there is going to have to be a miles driven tax on EV’s to recover lost highway funds that the gas tax covers today. Of course if you are in favor of higher taxes …

taxes remain a zero sum game.

Not sure how … in order to cover these subsidies as the EV industry grows would require tremendous tax increases to cover the huge cost of the EV subsidies when say 30% of new car sales are EV unless at that point there are no more subsidies? Then not as cost effective as portrayed above. The mileage tax should be zero sum game but right now its all lost revenue.

gas tax revenue is already deficient. You may also recall that leasing to a huge bite out of car sales tax money. eventually of course leasing and sales are taxed the same.

I have yet to find anyone who wants to pay taxes. But I do believe we will have an EV tax of some sort to offset the gas tax revenue that is getting lost. EVs drive on the same roads as ICE cars so they need to pay their fair share. The simple solution would be to pay a tax when you use a public station like Electrify America/EVgo, etc. but the charging model is really build on private at home charging. I guess the simplest way would be a tax when you renew your registration. But that could be a big bill .

The only way I see being fairly taxed is to do a verified odometer reading every month. It can't be the same every month as we drive different distances all the time so the tax should change each month rater than being fixed. Otherwise there would be no fairness if all EV owners paid the same road usage tax
