For what it's Worth-Tesla

The only way I see being fairly taxed is to do a verified odometer reading every month. It can't be the same every month as we drive different distances all the time so the tax should change each month rater than being fixed. Otherwise there would be no fairness if all EV owners paid the same road usage tax
I totally agree.

FAIR TAX! That's an oxymoron. Your taxes pay for all sorts of things you never use. If you buy gas you are driving on the roads. Yet the roads have to be prebuilt and have fixed costs. Eventually everyone is going to have the equivalent of an Easy Pass. There are already roads that are Easy Pass only. Maybe that could be used to very milage and collected at tag renewal.
There is no free lunch.

who said anything about a free lunch. I merely stated that fairness should be based on miles driven rather than merely owning an EV

I never said you said anything about free lunch. It was merely a rhetorical comment.i think I included a method for collecting the tax you suggested.

Great thoughts. I did have a look at my friends Lucid Air Grand Touring this weekend. Very nice car indeed.

Why don't you just install a permanent door to your ass that can accessed from outside your house so the tax man can crawl in whenever he wants?

EV vehicles are WORSE for any metric that is suppose to be about the environment. They should be reversing all those incentives and then call it fair.

Sorry disagree. I'm sure for the remainder of your life you will be able to buy and drive an ICE car.

Everyone has an opinion, mine is just different.

VMT like this is basically tracking the individual by the govt which seems a difficult standard to pass. I think a flat $ is prob coming first.

I had hopes but the studies clearly indictae that until something very drastically changes with EV, as they stand now, they're 70% more of a burden than any ICE vehicle over the life. And that's crazy since you can't even get parts for so many things on Teslas.... Parts add to the fabled stupid metric "footprint".

Tesla is just one car. I'm not interested in buying a Tesla. Again you have every right to purchase whatever kind of car you like. If EV cars are not for you great. My next car will be an EV.

FWIW, I felt the same as you and have owned MBZ most of my life. Looked there EV's. Couldn't stand them . Way overpriced and battery still far behind Tesla. Bottom line for me was battery distance on a charge was paramount. Im sure with time there will be serious competition but when it comes to battery Tesla has them all beat. Give in to the power of the force

Best in Breed vs best in show.

Tesla's Model Y has been recognized as one of the safest cars of 2023 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), receiving the agency's Top Safety Pick+ rating for the third year.

Yes went down the Tesla road years ago when I was about to pull the trigger on one. I love the technology but I'm not a fan of the fit and finish.

I'm also not a fan of Tesla's repair model. I know a few people who have been in fender benders and getting them repaired was a big issue for them.

Now these are just things I'm not a fan of. For those that love Tesla cars that is great. There are other EVs I have my eye on at this point.

Yes being one the safest cars is an incredible accomplishment.

Actually I think they are a fun toy (that I wouldn't park in garage). What I have higher hopes for is EV logging trucks. And that batteries get better.

It's just all the pretending they are anything but fun toys that drives me up the walls. And tax incentives? Very offensive given the reality.

I'm actually pro requirements for lawn mowers in city limits to be electric only... that or silence exhaust on normal ones.

It is amazing how folks argue that an EV is worse in every metric. Gee, I pay $20 a month to charge two cars vs, the price of gas. No upkeep at all, no oil changes, timing belts, brake pads or rotor replacements, engine tune ups. We have owned An S since 2017, a 3 since 2018 and we have saved tons of $ vs. what we paid owning a Volvo and a MB. Then you factor in the performance of the car, the comfort of the seats and interior. What other metrics are left? Critical thinking seems to be in short supply. But don’t that get in the way of your narrative.

The metrics everyone uses to justify them are related to the impact on the environment. They don't care if you like the car and spend less money.
