Half Way To Hell Here In SoCal

Steve, I hope things improve in your area and you and your home stay out of harm's way.

so far all is well as no homes AFAIK have been damaged. All of the livestock have been moved out of the area. The wind has subsided considerably since yesterday but still sufficient that the mountain range adjacent to Saddleback mountain is now smoking in multitude of places

I have some friends in Coto that I've been talking to and the way the fire is burning south is getting scary. Be safe!

Hopefully, if that's even a thing, the wind off the ocean blows it east and away from you, Steve. One wind shift and it turns back, very scary. Looks like the top of Coto de Caza is less than 1/2 mile from the Robinson mandatory evac zone? Don't see a legend or fire outline on the OC map, trying to eyeball and overlay the InciWeb map of the fire and Google map of the area.

So many large, fast-growing fires, resources stretched awfully thin. I know some CO crews are in CA. I helped work a fire line one summer in college; nasty hot work I couldn't do at all now.

I have friends all around that area from back when I worked in LA area; many lived in communities down to and in OC, and we'd hit the national forest for off-roading and camping. But even back then that area was a tinderbox.

This brings back painful memories of staying up all night packing and praying, selecting what we could save in a couple of car loads, and bugging out.

Good luck, Steve! Scary stuff!

From Wikipedia:

Cause

[edit]
The Airport Fire was unintentionally ignited by an Orange County public works crew using heavy equipment in Trabuco Canyon. Two employees were moving and emplacing large boulders as barriers on Trabuco Creek Road, with the intention of preventing the public—primarily motorcyclists—from accessing a part of the canyon filled with dry brush because of the high fire danger. During this work, the employees noticed smoke coming from their vehicle's loader basket. They called 911 and attempted to put out the fire using extinguishers, but were unsuccessful. The Orange County Fire Authority classified the fire's cause as "unintentional".[3]

Thumps up Steve. Same problem here in Cape Town. We have 3 dedicated fire helicopters on standby. At the end of the summer every thunderstorm will ignite multiple fires. When you look out of your window at a mountain in flames it is quite scary.

It has gone over the other side of the mountain and hit homes in Lake Elsinore where Understand several homes were destroyed

we are just about to go for our morning walk so I will have a better feel for things when I see the sky. Sun is just coming up here

I know that area.
I did 6-8 weeks of work there in the 70’s.
Trabuco Canyon was one area, and a lot down off the 34 (Ortega Highway).

In addition to all the other fire dangers, the burning poison oak would be pretty nasty to inhale.
And it seemed like there was a fair amount of that crap in the area.

things look finally ok here as the weather has changed and was only 63 on our walk today. The fire however rages on and has travelled to the other side of the mountain No wind. Not supposed to get sunny until 1100 today. Unfortunately there have been homes destroyed in the Lake Elsinore area. Our side of the mountain has been pretty much burned so I think our risk is gone

Good news for your side, anyway. Hope you aren't dealing with flash floods this winter, though.
