Hot Pressings

Mark - I live in a 2 bedroom apartment, which I rent.

DEV - My setup is not nearly as grand, but it brings me great pleasure nonetheless. Nottingham Analogue Horizon SE, Pioneer SA-9500II Integrated, Totem Sttaf speakers, Monster HDP2400 Power centre and various cables/IC's (Transparent, Ultralink, Mogami, AudioQuest, Valab/King Cable). We are close indeed, as are a few other members. Nice to see a growing GTA contiingent here!:)

John, in the end it's all about the music. Where did you find that pce., I also enjoy Supertramp. What's a good price to pay for such.

DEV - I picked it up at a place called Ric's Recollections in Port Credit (Mississauga), and he has about 10 or so used A&M Audiophile pressings....The Police, Cat Stevens, other Supertramp (I snagged the one copy of CWC). Ric's got a very nice selection of used and new audiophile presiings and he knows his stuff. The only negative is that he is usually more expensive than most.

And you are absolutely spot on....it's always been about the music for me, and always will be.

EDIT: I paid $45 for the Crisis LP

I have seen his postings but never paid attention, that's a fair price for that pce. Did he happen to have a second copy?

No, but he did have "Crime of the Century" and "Breakfast In America". Those however are from the 2nd release batch (without the Gold Band), but they were still pressed in Japan by JVC. As such I would think the quality is similar, if not identical.

Must not be groove perfect, I suspect

A couple of pages back, I mentioned that the Waxtime Direct Metal Mastering of Ella & Louis was better than the Speakers Corner re-issue. Yesterday, Chad Kassem walked in and played a test pressing of his 45rpm re-master of Ella & Louis and absolutely killed my Waxtime press (even on my stereo cartridge).

While chatting with him, I told him how long I had waited for Tea for the Tillerman and how disappointed I was with it because of the difference between that and the original Island pink. His response was that he has every pressing including the pink, the pink rim, the palm tree, etc. and he thought that his reissue was better in many ways. It was a decision he made to re-master the original tapes, but it did come from the original tapes. So it boils back down to what we prefer - he (and I have to add many others) prefer the QRP (which is available), I prefer the original Pink (which is unobtainium).

One of the lurkers on this forum also brought me a first US pressing on A&M and we had a listen. I would still rank the original Pink label to be miles ahead. One of the people in the audience that gathered said that his measure was the goosebumps factor - he did not get goosebumps with the A&M, but he got it when we played the original Pink..... but he is a digital fan because he did not even pause when I told him that we were comparing a digital copy of the original Pink with the wax of the A&M.

A few more albums I was listening to this afternoon:

2) Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges - Back to Back. The Classic Records re-issue in the late 1990's is far better than the 180gm and 200gm later re-issues. I haven't been able yet to score a first pressing from Verve. The original 1959 mono pressing should be a real treasure if someone can find it.

Keep an eye out for a German pressing of this. Germany, Verve 2304 503, in stereo.

The music leapt out from my speakers when I first placed the needle in the groove of this pressing. Amazing quality to the vinyl, and the reproduction is astonishing.

Actually Chad is coming out with the Johnny Hodges as part of his Verve 45 rpm series. That might be worth keeping an eye out for too.

Just got the new Leonard Cohen LP "Old Ideas". Terrific songs and great sonics on 180 gm vinyl. Comes with the CD

I just received Chet Atkins in Hollywood on Classic Records 200 gram Clarity vinyl yesterday. Stunning sound ! Grab a copy before they are gone. TheMusic has some left.

I have the original LP if somebody wants it.

The one with the ahem, healthy young blonde on the cover or the original with a guitar on a background of Hollywood/LA?

Mono or stereo?

That would be the one Doc. It's stereo.

I bought an original copy of David Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name" for $10 on Ebay for my wife. Now I understand what all the sonic raves are about! To my surprise, the music is pretty good

Just finished listening to this 2LP set.....original pressing....hot pressing indeed! Get a copy if you can!

Picked up the new Derek Sherinian "Oceana", have not played it yet though, soon.

+1...Fabulous music!

There is so much good stuff around and in good condition these pressings are a joy to own. I love me some good remasters ( when done right), but I'll take the orignal pressing anyday.

Here's another one. US/Canada pressings take a backseat to most UK/Euro pressings, but this one doesn't. The music is vibrant, open and alive with all of the emotion you'd expect.
