IMPORTANT WARNING ALERT! Audigon, my membership name has been hacked, check yours

And now Audiogon has damn near made it impossible to talk to anyone outside of Audiogon because of their paranoia over deals being made outside of Audiogon. You could make a case that Audiogon has made it easier for scammers to rip people off. Where is our resident lawyer when you need him?
I'm retired, except for certain things. But happy to guide DEV if he needs it.

Yes, the link Dev posted does indicate there was an ad. It does say it is expired though. I wonder if Dev cancelled the ads or if it was Audiogon?

I agree they should have a link to report fraud.

Agon removed them for me, they were not my ads. I spotted other members names also on other ads. I'm not receiving any further emails and was notified by Agon that they recovered my account and membership so it's all cleaned up luckily.

I will say that they jumped all over this and responded quickly and I do appreciate, so two thumbs up to them for doing this and Thankyou!

I would like to know how and the heck in the first place did they get this info.

There are just too many scammers now on Agon selling and supposively buying. They are somehow hacking into accounts and then stealing the members identity and placing adds and then collecting the money.

Most of these ads seem to be in Europe and asking for money to be wired,

All I want to say is be very careful because what happened to me can happen to any of you.

The new site always has you signing in along with logging in with your password, I believe this is how they are doing it. Somehow has a ghost page and then have your membership name and password

Thanks whart!

I believe I was lucky catching it as soon as it was posted and Agon was quick to responce and cleaned it up, very grateful for that. Not having any further issues or bogus emails.

I just went on and noticed allot of the other ads that seemed bogus are now gone.

Product:

Wilson numerous speaker ads
Vac Statement 450's that I have that list for close to $80K and up for sale @ $20/ $24/ and finally $15K
DCS
Esoteric
Boulder
Kondo

just to name a few, just remember if the deal looks to good be true there usually is a reason behind such SCAM!

Friend of mine lost $12,500 on audiogon for a DCS cd player , account showed over 100+ positive feedback
Audiogon did nothing about his claim , just email saying they where sorry

Did he use paypal? Or wait for check to clear?

Dev you might want to check with Audiogon admin looks like your account has been hacked again? Wilson sasha and ayre amps just listed with your username.

Saw that too last night.

Thanks guys :D , ya big scam!

Non of that product is mine, Audigon is haveing big issues.

Two other friends recently had their membership names hacked also. Audiogon needs to make everyone aware because it's gone absolutely nuts recently.

Can someone tell me how in the heck are they able to do this, I haven't used Agon due to this.

Good, that'll save on shipping for those Ayre monoblocks. :D

Yes I wondered about that too :)

This crap is crazy. I don't understand why all of a sudden this has become a problem?

What's even crazier is that these hucksters had the ad right there on the front page of Agon? Do you think Agon got paid for the ad or they used a fake cc number? Not that I really feel for Agon.

Amazing, I've never seen an organization so inept.

When this started to occur right after the site change I sent about 50 emails begging Audiogon to alert members of the fraud issues. I also posted a zillion comments in their blog, all of which were deleted by moderators, and started several forum threads there to try and alert members of risks, again deleted by moderators. I then tried posting in existing threads to try and warn members but even those comments were deleted. I even posted a bunch of comments on Audiogons Facebook page. Even if they had sent out an email to all members with some simple identifiers that folks could keep an eye out for it would possibly have saved guys from getting ripped off, or even a box on the front page with some things to watch out for. Nope, they wanted to cover it all up and make things appear nice and cozy. A clear disregard for the safety of all who use the site.

In addition to the blatant disregard for member safety, they aid the thieves by providing all of your personal information when you respond to an offer. All a thief has to do is make an offer and hope you counter. They are then provided with your name, address, phone number. Why they did this I have no idea. Audiogon has focused their efforts on making sure members have no way to contact one another so they can collect all of their fees which has actually also made the site less safe. You are stripped of the ability to check out a member for yourself which is what any smart guy would do before exchanging big dollars, right?

So sad.

I'm hardly defending Audiogon, but they did restore a private messaging system in the last month or so.
Don't know why the apparent increase in hacks and scam listings, but it seems far worse than in pre-change days.
I saw a listing yesterday for very expensive piece, from a user whose feedback had stopped back in 2006. I did a look up of the purported seller and he was no longer a registered member.

Yes, they they do allow for PM's now but if I'm going to buy/sell an expensive piece of gear I'd like a bit more contact than a web based PM. Would you buy/sell a car or house by chatting with someone via PM a couple times? I would not. Some of the gear we are talking about here is valuable. There are other situations that make personal contact important too. I had a guy 2 days ago that wanted to demo a cable I had listed. I'm not going to send one off without his personal information! We tried but were unable to exchange contact info. I emailed Audiogon about it and they said my PM's were getting removed because I included personal contact info...and to please stop. Rather than help me make that transaction they basically just directed me to stop trying to give a guy my email address. In the bigger picture, I'm not a real fan of PM systems anyway. Email works just fine. I also hate being monitored like a child :)

If Audiogon would just charge a flat fee up front it would not matter how we communicated between buyer and seller. If they wanted more money for high dollar items they could just charge more for those.

If they persist with the model they have now they are going to fold. It has become too risky to do business there now. Why pay their fees when they really don't offer any more protection from fraud than Craigslist.

I am not disagreeing- whenever I have bought or sold, i want to know the bona fides and sophistication of the party on the other side, i'd rather not do a transaction, than have one sour, or worse. I was not aware that Gon was editing out personal contact info even in PMs. That's unfortunate.

Sean, I'm not sure but in the case of some manufacturers, I think they pay a fee that does permit direct contact outside of the site. Obviously, that doesn't help private sellers, which is where alot of the deals are.
