IMPORTANT WARNING ALERT! Audigon, my membership name has been hacked, check yours

If Audiogon would just charge a flat fee up front it would not matter how we communicated between buyer and seller. If they wanted more money for high dollar items they could just charge more for those.

If they persist with the model they have now they are going to fold. It has become too risky to do business there now. Why pay their fees when they really don't offer any more protection from fraud than Craigslist.

Very good points!

Or maybe some sort of membership fee that could somehow be offset against selling prices to weed out the hackers?

Bill, I have noticed that as well. At least with the dealers and manufactures it is easy to confirm it is legit by contacting them directly. If they put the name of the business in their ad then you can look up their contact info elsewhere. I'm sure this why Audiogon is allowing them to do that.

I'm sure Audiogon would not loose money by charging a flat fee. As long as they charge appropriately for the value of the item being sold. They could just have different price tiers for different price ranges. They just don't have the clout or the resources to do it like Ebay does.

Hi Myles,

If people can hack accounts then that membership fee would have already have been paid before hand. I don't see how that would help. Making people pay up front will discourage most hackers I think. As long as the payment info is not attached to the account for future use by a hacker.

As it is now if you don't sell an item you don't have to pay as much because the initial fee is lower. I personally am willing to pay a little more up front to have the ability to have uncensored communication for the good of both parties.

Was it Agon or some other site that offered an independent, third party escrow service. The seller would thave to send the given equipment to hold in escrow until payment was received and cleared. Then the item could be released.

I have considered offering such a service. Make sure they are bonded. Less you may find you have traded one devil for another.

I don't know. The item would have to be very expensive to justify the expense of a third party escrow service. Has anyone used one before? How much did it cost?

I saw a post over on another unnamed site that these crooks are "stealing" items from eBay and putting them up for sale the next day on Audiogon.

I saw one ad that was posted on Ebay for a Mac amp (7500) with a seller in NJ and the exact same ad posted, both picture and description, on Agon, with for a seller in Spain (5000). Interesting and this may be a clue, they won't take Paypal, only a money order or certified check.

Escrow service is the only way forward if one is uncertain about the legitimacy of the seller.

I have heard escrow.com is a legit good escrow company.

Does ebay have a escrow company that they recommend or use?

Ebay acts like they protect the buyer from fraud, but they don't. Good luck getting pennies on your dollars from Ebay if someone hoses you.

This is why I prefer to use Paypal and buy/sell only in the US.

At least with Paypal you have a good chance you will get your money back if you can prove your case. But, even when it's a slam dunk case, Paypal still puts you through the wringer and it takes awhile before you get your money back.

It seems audiogon have taken down the fake listings but no notification to members on the front page or anywhere a bit disconcerning as to how many other listings are actually fake? Audiogon show no intention to protect buying members from fraudulent transactions. So i guess if you make a purchase through that site you must protect yourself and always use paypal as technicaly paypal is an escrow service and although funds are transfered into the sellers account they are frozen until the make a dispute period has finished or that is how i read there policy, please correct me if i'm wrong? There would be no way i would pay via cheque or direct debit into a sellers account.

Yep, I would say so. Some who have a somewhat additive behavior make very easy marks.

I keep asking them to send out a warning to others so not to get ripped off but still don't see anything.

I have suggested they place on each add a tab saying "report problem with ad" and such be a priority to be looked into by moderators. Stop having the log in, it's crazy that you have to log in every time providing your passward just to ask a question, I believe this is one way they are getting your info.

This new site managment is a nitemare never mind the actual site. I'm hesitant to even click onto an ad out of curiousity because it could be a fake one and opening such up who knows what info. these scammers are gaining. If everyone would just keep sending them emails one would think they would get the message

If you note, these scammers aren't accepting paypal! So if someone won't, that might be tipoff.

Aren't we all in away addictive, buying gear, music, trading back and forth information. It really is addictive! ;) You must admit we are a unique crowd but like any others who are into watches, sport cards, coins/stamps collecting and cars have similarities  I was over at a freinds place on the weekend and was on line with 5 different auctions for hockey cards ranging from 500-1500 and going crazy, was kinda funny watching.

More fake AudioGon ads. Front page listings, no pictures , no Paypal, all asking best offers. Sellers have old feedback . Very easy to spot now. All from Europe .

Mr. Accoustat's account was hacked today. Someone was selling a pair of Wilson MAXXS for $7500. Account is now marked suspended so can't link. This is becoming an epidemic and Audiogon really needs to put a stop to this stuff!
