The last road block to interent sales tax on companaies like AMAZON is pending. The last road block anti-tax Republican Govenors seem to have caved in because of declining revenues. Talks with AMAZON on how the taxes will be collected are ongoing.
We have been here before. A legal raodblock remains in the form of a Supreme Court ruling.(It requires physical presence in the state where the tax is asessed.)

Consumers shouild not worry. Most compnies offset the tax with free shipping.(my Opinion)

I believe only 5 states currently don't require use tax to be paid on internet purchases. The company I work for pays use tax on all internet purchases and I do personally. I'm sure there are millions/billions in taxes that aren't paid. Moving the tax collection to the vendor instead of consumer makes better sense.

However, the free shipping costs are rolled into the purchase price.

There is no free lunch. My expereince is you pay tax or s&h not both. For example when I purchase bicycle parts form Performance bicycle I have to pay sales tax because they have stores in Virginia. With club membership I get two day free shipping. Thier shipping costs are far less than mine. For the most part we are a voluntary tax system. You are right. Under the new law Amazon,et al would collect the taxes similar to brick and mortar stores.

Thanks for the clarification.

P.S. Making the vendor collect would seem to be more compettive for the brick and mortar store. They have to collect and deal with the higher price. AMAZON fought it hard and I do not know whether they will be paid for collecting the tax as they had previously lobbied for.
