Is She Really "What's Best" Or Is She Just Putting Us On

I think Lady Gaga is the real deal. So are Katy Perry and Avril Lavigne. The Pop princess that seems to have lost her way but has an abundance of talent is Cristina Aguilera, she could have been great, and maybe she still can, but she doesn't seem to know what her artistic identity is, burying her talent under self-indulgent vocal runs and vaudeville make-up. Lady Gaga get's away with what many can't. The saying is to carry it, you gotta be it. I don't think her costumes are an act, just self expression on crack.

Yeah totally agree with all of that, especially about Katy Perry and her one off I think country/folk small venue gig she did of her songs here in Europe.

Katy Perry is another who has been to the Madonna school, but she's a little too pre-fab/high concept/novelty act for me at this point. Have to see where she goes from here.

If there's something that sends me fast in the other direction it's that behaviour, attempting to blast the mic across to the other side of the room constantly. How many of the current crop know the concept of light and shade?

I just got home from Avril's Manila leg of her Black Star tour. She's a stone cold fox. Fantastic stage presence whipping the mostly female crowd into a frenzy and literally acting like a puppet master just by the wave of her arms. This woman needed no gimmicks. Very good back up band too.

FWIW, I think Cristina Aguilera is one of the greatest talents working right now. I will take her over all the aforementioned, the very moment she decides to release her first grown-up album. Until then, I'll just have to re-view her performance of It's A Man's World on YouTube occasionally and know what it wound up tight inside that small package, waiting to explode when mixed with the right catalyst.

Me too. Is it just me or are her best performances the ones where she is a guest and isn't allowed to go over the top like with Bocelli and withHerbie Hancock?

It's not just you, Jack. I don't know if it's "over the top" though. The "Man's World" performance is pretty over the top and just mind-blowing. I think it's just when she gets good material and performs it in a natural context instead of the over-produced pop-tart crap that her handlers give her to record/perform....or that she picks for herself, god help us. But for my part, I have much the same problem with Madonna and Ga Ga. Talented performers performing stuff I just can't develop any interest in.

Have you seen her brief performance with the Stones? I forget the video's name. Richards is looking at her and grinning as if he's thinking "Damn. Tinkerbell can sing." Priceless.

"Tinkerbell can sing"

I LOVE IT :)

Sorry, I can't stand her music at all. Also, as far as I'm concerned she is ripping off Madonna.
