LampizatOr Horizon - Tube Rolling Paradise

You have right Marty. With the chinese adapter the RGN2004 is just a good tube. The adapter is built with the wrong resistor, which cause extreme heat inside the adapter. Guess what happens with the resistance in this hot enviroment. With the right adapter it is the finest sounding recti I’ve ever heard. I also have a GEC U52, which was one of my favorite recti. In my system I prefer the RGN over the GEC. You should try a Telefunken/Klangfilm RGN2004 with the right adapter :)
What resistor do you use in the adaptor? The one from ebay has 2 1ohm in parallel so .75ohms across wires:)

I have no idea what resistors are used in the adapter I bought on ebay.
They probably are not Vishays!

Yes someone said the same as well. Let me look up the formula I saw in a textbook. Sounds like I might be wrong..let me check:)

Yup you are right!. I also remembered what I did here as well. I measured the r across the lead rather than desoldering so .75 is correct still:):) but 1ohm for each resister is probably wrong. Will have to look into it again:)

Also photo of adaptor opened up as well

One for me pls

Thanks so much to this community. Horizon owners are the best—hands down!! Love all this research and special thanks to Marty for his detailed reports. All of the tube sharing and wisdom around here has improved my system to no end. While I lack the ability to articulate myself and the experience of many here, what I can add to the conversation is that I have found a very clear relationship and “synergy” between tubes which is as important as which tube is in which spot. For example, my ECC32 sounded terrible with the 6384s—so much so that I thought the 32s had a problem. However, the adapted ECC31 sounded great with the 6384. Then, when I got the OS1s, the ECC32s were better by a nice margin. That is the extent of what I have to offer: that the tubes need to have synergy. It is not so simple as choosing a single tube for a slot—one must consider the relationship between all the tubes.

PS I have a well-burnt-in Brimar 5U4G now and have 2 RGN on the way (mesh and non-mesh) with good adapters. I will let you know what I think after they arrive :)

The OS1 with the RGN 2004/Klangfilm and ECC32 is synergy at its very best in my system

I am mesmerized watching the Tele RGN do its magic show of color as it powers on

I figured I should folllw the advice of the wizards who turned me on to the OS1 so I ordered two RGN—with and without mesh

In my system I prefer the EL51s over the OS1s.

The mesh is the one to have IMO

Aha! Great photo. In my DIY days, i would have taken this on in a heart beat. I looked at Mouser and there are a number of superb resistors that look like they would work well here. Have fun with it!

Haven’t tried the EL 51 but I am satisfied with the OS1 the 6384 are also spectacular. I have tried lots of recti too: Frankie, Tak, Brimar and Sophia. Soon will try both RGN as well….

Thank you. I have the identical tube as well. Parallel plates. Very different physically and sonically than the High Wycombe staggered plate variant such as the 53KU Cossor/Osram/GEC. I never expected these tubes to be sonically different but was alerted to this by reading some critical reviews of these variants that were written decades ago (Lord only knows what gear was used to conduct these comparisons back then?) . The tubes are sonically nearly identical but the staggered plate version was thought to have "better" bass, which is what I have found as well. Here are some examples:

GEC staggered plate- the plates are in the same plane but staggered, perhaps better appreciated from the top view

MWT parallel plate- (the most common type of U52). The plates are well separated and at the far sides of the bulb.

Cossor 53KU/Osram CV378- once again, staggered plates. As far as I can tell, all the GEC/MOV/Osram staggered plates were made in the MOV factory in High Wycombe which is designated as "K" on the glass or box.

All excellent and beautiful tubes. Whatever works for you is good. Can't go wrong with any of these.

If you would kindly suggest the "ne ultimate plus" RGN2004 adapter, I'll gladly revisit that tube again but for now, I'm in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" space for my Horizon tube set.
I know this is the Horizon thread, but I decided I just had to try the Cosser 53KU staggered plate with my TRP 3. Just ordered one. I’m really starting to gather a full box of rectifiers. For some reason I keep going back to the Sophia Aqua 274b.
