Lampizator Horizon360 - Broadening Our Musical Horizons

Then … having developed self awareness , It disagrees violently with your preference for vinyl over streaming , your choice of music and your politics and proceeds to attempt to pull your head off ;)
Sounds like your bot has been watching TV.

I have been told that my preamp sounds best with a volume setting of about 20. That is too loud when the Horizon is at 63 so I have to lower it to about 50. If I want to keep it at 63 I have to lower my preamp to about 10. However, I don’t hear any real difference with those 2 combinations.
This is what confused me regarding volume on the Horizon and why I thought you ran it lower than 63...

I wish Lukasz would offer a Horizon sans volume control. I use an ARC 6SE, and just cannot live without a quality preamplifier (I often run 5-8 sources). These messages are exactly why I don't want a volume control with my Lampi (my Pacific fortunately has none). You end up fighting with two volume controls, and adding more complexity when it's not needed.

He does make one. It’s the new Genya which is a scaled down Horizon. Same chip as the Horizon

AXPONA 2025 – Surprise Announcement
Debut of the GENYA DAC in Room 712
We’re pleased to announce the official debut of the new GENYA DAC at AXPONA 2025, presented in Room 712.
This new model was developed to offer much of the sonic character of our flagship Horizon DAC in a more accessible and focused design. GENYA is the result of a unique opportunity: following the upgrade of ~50 Horizon units to the new Horizon 360 specification, we were left with 50 original Horizon digital engines — all of which were too exceptional to retire. These engines have now been refurbished and repurposed to power the GENYA.
The debut system will feature:
• Gershman Acoustics loudspeakers
• Pass Labs amplification
• Cardas Audio cables
• LampizatOr Gulfstream music server as the digital source

About the GENYA DAC
GENYA is designed to be a purist DAC — free of non-essentials — while preserving the musical integrity and performance that LampizatOr is known for.
Key Features:
• Refurbished Horizon-1 digital engine
• Balanced + Single-Ended outputs
• Concealed tube design (6N6P standard; ECC182-compatible)
• Copper capacitors and silver internal wiring
• USB JL converter
• DSD512 compatibility
• No volume control, display, or remote
• Charcoal black finish only
• €16,000 base / €19,000 GENYA Plus with upgraded supertube board
________________________________________
Limited Production
Production of the GENYA DAC is limited by the corresponding to the number of recovered Horizon digital engines. There are currently no plans to produce additional units once these are allocated.

That’s great news, thanks for the info, Steve. Looks very attractive for someone like me.

And FWIW you can use the Horizon together with an outboard preamp. I do. I pass full signal (63) into
my LAMM LL1 and use the gain control on my Lamm What’s the issue

I think Lukasz himself answers your question better than I can. At this price level, purity is paramount as eliminating useless clutter from the signal pays dividends. For those who need a volume control, the traditional Horizon is of course essential. But for folks like me with a world class preamp, we don’t need to add yet another volume control. To quote Lukasz:

The circuit of this DAC is so pure and simple, that the Horizon Engine 99 can really shine, making it instantly a superb DAC in a class of its own. The soundstage is like no other. It stretches so wide and so deep that it exceeds the room boundaries and develops in our imagination beyond the walls and ceiling. Within this huge, immersive soundscape we can hear better than before where things are happening - we hear the individual musicians, their instrument, their reverb, their interplay with the recording venue and the other musicians.

Actually he answered your question And BTW I owned your preamp years ago when I had alll ARC electronics. I used it to drive ARC Ref 600 mk ll mono amps

Yes, I agree there’s room for the original Horizon and the newer scaled down purer version that eliminates volume control, display and remote control. The price is much lower as well. It’s an attractive proposition. Lukasz knows how to market his DACs. There’s plenty of choice at all price points.

The ARC 6SE is not the most neutral preamp I’ve owned. I think it’s a bit soft sounding and not as dynamic as others I’ve heard. But it suits my tastes. I’d rather have a mellower sounding preamp that lets me enjoy poorer sounding recordings. If I only listened to streaming, I’d get the H360. I like my physical media a bit too much. Plus there’s the nostalgia factor. I often remember where I bought a particular CD or vinyl album, many from trips overseas. A lot of stuff that’s quite exotic. Kind of like buying a real book at a bookstore.

I’m an old fogey who’s got quaint tastes! We are a dying breed, that’s for sure. Most of my colleagues don’t even own a physical book or a CD or record. It’s all digital. It’s even worse. ChatGPT can summarize all the books you ever want to read. It’s read pretty much all text humanity has written. My colleagues now only use ChatGPT for all their “reading”. We are now in a different era. Wonder how long it will take music to be ChatGPT’ized?

I have the ARC 750SE, which is a bit simpler in its design than the 600. That used a more sophisticated tube regulated power supply. Monster amplifiers!

a huge shout out to @LampiNA (Fred). If you guys want other some. great music for streaming I have to admit that all day yesterday I was playing Fred's Lampizator playlist. The music is superb and there is a great variety all of which will give your system a. terrific work-out Just go to Roon and then click on Qobuz and scroll to the bottom where you see HiFi Audio Partners and click on Lampizatror. In fact there are some fabulous playlists in HiFi Audio partners ......another one to spend a day with is the MTEK playlist. Both of these are not only enjoyable but each song will demonstrate different aspects of your system

There may be geographic area limitations, because I can't find the Lampizator one.
