Lighting

Thanks Carl. Last time I heard anything out of my system was the end of June last year.

I can tell you that I did just finally have a listen and I must admit it sounded pretty darn good even with my perfunctory positioning of the speakers as they are now and are still on casters. I wanted to have a listen to get some initial impressions as the rest of the room treatments are going in, specifically the tuning tubes and Helmholtz resonator. Francisco was talking before about expectation bias commenting after the measurements but TBH there was expectation bias from the moment I saw those tubes glowing :)

Steve, congrats and I hope your new room exceeds all of your dreams. I didn't realize it has been that long.

What have you been doing to satisfy your soul, musically?

Hanging out here at WBF reading about everyone else's wonderful systems :)

well I can say that yesterday it is finally up and running and I have been listening to just about everything to get a handle on what I am hearing. More to follow so stay tuned. For me it was a lengthy exercise in attempting to achieve great sound with my X-2's in a room much smaller than my last. I have hundreds of photos from start to finish of the project. The nice thing about the room is that even though it is filled with room treatments, none can be seen as they are either in the walls, floor, ceiling and attic. General appearance is nothing fancy but preliminary listening yesterday was very positive. Man it was good to see the glow of those two GM-70 tubes

Shouldn't there be a turntable on top of your equipment rack instead of a damn house plant?

I've given thought to adding a turntable just where you talking about; and I'm aware they can sound really good given proper setup and maintenance. But I'm really enjoying listening to music through my EMM Labs XDS1 without any fuss:) IMO it's one of the most analogue sounding digital players, especially with well recorded and mastered CD's and SACD's.

I have some nice fixtures by Estiluz high on the side walls that radiate light up and down. They are silent when dimmed. Have some recessed LEDs well behind the listening couch that are dimmable too.

One of these days, I'll hide some LED rope light style or flat panels behind my projection screen and get a little fancier. Have been kicking around ideas in my head for awhile.

Main thing to me is to able to dim lights -- less for the eyes to do relaxes the brain for sound. And I like the effect of the sound coming out of a darker rather than lighter place.

As for cool vs. warm, it's entirely subjective if you're not concerned with color rendering accuracy. Studies have been done on the effect of light color on our psyche. As warm light more approximates sunrise and sunset, as well as fire, and more recently, the incandescent lights that have been the standard for more than 100 years (read warm feelings of nostalgia) -- it is surmised that because of these reasons, it's more associated with comfort.

Lights? I don't need no stinking lights! I just make sure I'm properly "lit up" and I'm good to go! :p
