Taking suggestions for the most over hyped musical acts.

I am nominate the Black Keys. In my opinion they are no where near as good
as the attention they are getting.

They are utterly mediocre songwriters. Not a hook in sight. Dan Auerbach is a mediocre singer at best.

Jack White - The White stripes.

I like him, but I'm not getting all of the accolades just yet.

I don't get Jack White either although his production credits are noteworthy. I love the Black Keys.

Over hyped or over rated?

If we're talking overrated, Nirvana, U2 and Guns & Roses have to be up there. I suspect Nirvana comes in first on most top ten lists.

I guess I mostly meant over rated. I think the BK are
mediocre, to be very kind.

What is cool is that there is no right or wrong answer, I was looking for opinions.

U2 and GNR are cornerstones of my music collection. Their importance to rock music, in my opinion,
is immeasurable.

GNR were the real thing, IMO.

Justin Bieber and his group.....IMHO no one even comes close to the amount of undeserved hype this kid gets...the kids do seem to like him though:rolleyes:

Don't think Jack White is overrated at all. From Elephant to producing/collaborating Loretta Lynn, breadth of style and quality is huge IMO.

He was on a program featuring Jimmy Page and The Edge. Don't think those guys would of included Jack unless they respect his playing, which they do....

It looks to me as though this topic is quickly devolving to an expression of musical tastes...

That's exactly what I was thinking. I don't like any of the ones mentioned, so far. :D

It’s apparent after reading the few posts here that one man’s ‘overhyped’ is the cornerstone of another man's collection.

I've heard several people say that The Beatles were the most over-rated and over-hyped band ever. If one is not a fan or only marginally so, I could understand that opinion.

Yep. Some say the same about Pink Floyd and The Doors.

I think a lot of bands today are over-hyped, what with all of the social media sites and their resultant expectations. The vast majority of those bands should never have been brought to the spotlight as they are marginal at best, but sites like YouTube and Facebook make it easy to get them there and for people to see what they have to offer.

And..., let's not forget all of the bands that are overrated/overhyped because of MTV. Weak music but appealing video.

Here's a good example:

Where are they now?

You'll remember this was a break-out hit driven by social media.....
