Natural Sound

I like this album/stream on Qobuz. I notice on my speakers the harpsichord is somewhat buried under the violins and other instruments. Especially when compared to using headphones. Take a listen and let me know if you sense the same. I wonder if its a horn thing, or my speaker thing.

Sorry, I can't help you. My system predates the age of digital.

Don't you have a actual harpsichord somewhere in your listening room ? ;)

I prefer the Magico system.

Thank you Brian. I enjoyed that system for many years until I heard something I preferred. We all have preferences, and these can be heard on such videos, clearly.

I remember you not liking the vdH Grand Cru at all. In this Magico system, it sounded very nice, IMO, and the overall sound improved quite dramatically with all of the set up experiments. I remember talking to you at length about the steel plates. Did you ever follow through with those in your system?

I was catching up on this thread and realizing how much more satisfied I myself have been moving from SS or high power tube plus Sonus Faber to low power SET and Open baffle with horn. It was the talk of Al and Madfloyd and are they converts. I can't imagine ever going back to SS plus boxed speaker. I have toyed with the idea of SS amps for convenience. But I just don't get a thrill from it like SET tubes and a horn. I hope over time Peter feels the same way. It's a very personal choice. I have one friend who is a never leave horns guy. 5 or 6 others are all high power this or that and robust authoritative bass box speaker lovers.
Something I have noticed too is that I tend to play with my volume much lower than most of the other people. I wonder if that is a commonality amoungs horn lovers vs SS and boxed.

Do you think you play music at lower DB now Peter, or about the same.
I made a big transition from Avantgarde duo mezzo horns to Boenicke W13's. On balance, I'm happy with the inevitable tradeoffs. I do miss the low volume ease and vertical scale of the horns, but I like the tonality of the W13's and of course their lack of horn coloration (however subtle it was in the AG's). Even with slightly diminished dynamics, I have a more "natural" sound now -- to keep on topic!

The problem is duo mezzo.

Peter,

Considering that your only source is vinyl, didn't you think about getting the Lamm LP1 signature phono and the L2.1 Reference line preamplifier for now?

BTW, I assume you will get the LP1 sometime soon! ;)

My bet is Peter has the LP1 on order. Or perhaps a few other possible phonostages. The LL1 has a few line inputs so he could have 3 different phonostages.

Many believe that the LL2 is better than the L2.1 due to the later being all tube.

I have no changes planned for the system. The rack is being designed for five Lamm boxes. I considered the LP1 and the LL2 combination which is also five boxes but settled on this pairing.

Little surprise there as you've hardly had time to adjust to the first nearly complete equipment change. The impactful change is unlikely to be pursued until David visits. Have you any thoughts on room tuning yourself at this early juncture?

P.S. You must have a very understanding wife to allow crates semi-permanent residence in the dining room.

Dan, I have nothing on order and there’s no reason to consider different phono stages. The LP 2.1 Deluxe is the best phono stage I’ve had in my system. I do not want to accommodate two additional boxes in my living room. I’m trying to get away from the system being such an intrusive element in my room. Replacing the freestanding speakers out in the room with corner horns was a big part of that.

Rando, Yes, my wife is a saint. I will continue to fine-tune the system. I was hoping to get back my rebuilt vdH Grand Cru yesterday, but it appears missing somewhere on the UPS truck. I am sure David will have some ideas once he gets here.

Hi Peter,

Fwiw and in the spirit of diverse opinion on vids - I prefer your new system versus the Magico sonically and aesthetically.

The immediate difference I notice is the more authentic tone of the new system - it has a timbre much more like real instruments. By contrast the Magico sounds like a facsimile - you are obviously listening to a hifi sound.

To me the Magico vid is more tits and arse (excuse my language lol) - all that excessive upper and lower energy presented in a manner that doesn’t flow - it really doesn’t sound that way in real life. It might be perceived as exciting by some but to me it is unnatural.

I am not sure to what degree the VDH contributes to that and I guess I won’t know that until the VDH is back in the new system and compare.

Anyway - enjoy. I think you are on a strong path for pleasure..

Bill I think you really nailed the difference in sound. The Magico system is unnatural (Pam Anderson) and the Vitavox system is natural (Kate Upton). I know which ones I prefer.....
