According to the USA today, Neil Young is launching PONO music which will offer "studio master quality music in an online store and a $399 Pono Player". According to Young, "we want to move digital music into the 21st century". As most of you probably know, Young has long advocated compressed MP3 as a despiccable format. This should be interesting. Does anyone know more?

Apparently Ayre (Charlie Hansen) developed the digital and analog circuitry, based at least in part on their work in developing the QB-9, QA-9 and KX-R Twenty, for the PonoPlayer.

I have had prototype PONO player since last fall and it is amaingly good for a portable $400 piece. Neil has spent a concerted effort in the last 2 years meeting with music industry executives and artists to build support for this approach - it is great to see they exceeded their goals yesterday getting it off the ground.

What will be great if it happens is a coordinated marketing plan to the masses touting high quality formats/playback. Hasn't happened since CDs.

Can you say where you got this info from? I see that Ayre is mentioned in the Kickstarter campaign, but there isn't much detail beyond that. A Charles Hansen developed hi-res portable player gets me quite interested in this.

At one point wasn't Neil also pursuing Meridian?

It's near the bottom of the Kickstarter page.

The greatest value to this project may be to kickstart Apple into a 24 bit iTunes store.

Agreed!

They could call it "My little Pono."

I mean where it specifically says he designed the analog and digital circuits. Because above that line it credits people from Semiphore Systems for designing the "hardware, firmware and electronics". I imagine Charles will have much to say about it on AA when he can!

This would have been revolutionary 5 years ago. Now it has to play catch up before it's even launched!
