Assistant Coach
Phil Handy returns for his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Lakers, having been a member of the 2020 NBA Championship staff.
Handy, 52, most recently served as assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors in 2018-19, where he contributed to the franchise’s first NBA Championship in 2019. Prior to his stop in Canada, Handy was an assistant coach and director of player development with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he worked for five seasons and was a member of the Cavaliers 2016 championship staff. He returns to the Lakers after serving in a player development role from 2011-13.
A native of San Leandro, Calif., Handy has strong ties to the Bay Area where he spent five years (2006-11) coaching young talent with the AAU Club Team 94, while training NBA players during the off-season. Handy also ran his own basketball training business for more than 13 years, working with top level talent in the from NBA, Europe and the collegiate ranks.
Handy played two seasons at the University of Hawaii, earning WAC All-Defensive Player of the Year and All-Newcomer honors. He had two NBA stints as a player with Golden State and Portland, and his professional playing career also included stops in CBA, Israel, France, England, Germany, Italy and Australia
