New Album & The Beginning of Basketball Season

Clippers have won 11 games in a row and moved into third place in the Western Conference, only one game back of Oklahoma City. San Antonio has won 10 in a row, keeping the Clips three games back of the Spurs. They play the Nuggets tonight in Denver.

I wishI could get excited about the Clipps, (that other LA team) and am pleased they have done so well. I just can't see them winning the western conference. It would be a real tribute to Doc if they could

Doc deserves a lot of credit. He has them playing much better defense. The team has continued to play well even with so many injuries - Chris Paul, JJ Redick, Jamal Crawford and now Darren Collison down with a virus.

Its tough to switch allegiances and the Lakers STILL get more coverage in LA - but there's a long history of success with the Lakers. Guess its like the Mets and the Yankees. I think I do remember you flirting with the Warriors a couple of season's back.

I won't say they will win it all but they are looking pretty darn good right now.

They are looking better than good. They look great. But so do the Spurs,Thunder, Rockets and Warriors (who BTW match up well with the Clipps). Nonetheless they are a terrific team and yes it's tough to switch allegiances and yes I was flirting with the Warriors when we lived in the Bay Area but have been a Lakers fan for ~40 years

To me, I see the Clippers' success in the playoffs riding on Blake's consistency. Is he going to be like Paul Pierce for Doc in Boston? Will he be Mr.Clutch and produce the points when needed down the like? While there's the luxury of having CP3 help out in clutch situations, I feel Blake has to fully mature in the playoffs and be like Duncan, or KD in the playoffs - play with nerves of steel, which can only come with maturity. Doc's arrival has certainly changed Blake's tentativeness. His mindset is more decisive now in taking shots, even from a longer range. Blake has got to become a player who will create and make his shots, and that will make him unstoppable and hard to contain.

Most probably, they will run into the Spurs for the Finals slot and when they do, it will be a well oiled and highly experienced Spurs vs. a younger and much rawer team though not lacking in talent. And the cohesiveness of Pop's team will be an advantage. Spurs are getting their second wind at this time.

Spurs are amazing. Every year it seems they are too old to compete and every year they are right there at the end. They have the best record in the NBA.

Hard to hate the Spurs. You just have to admire them.

If the Clippers lose to the Spurs I can live with that. Losing to the Warriors or the Grizzlies - that would be a lot tougher to take. Hard for me to like either of those teams based on their style of play. In my opinion both of those teams play dirty. Of course, I am certain that fans of those two teams don't like the Clippers either.

I do like Marc Gasol on the Grizzlies and Stephen Curry on the Warriors. Hard not to respect those guys.

Somewhere along the line this year, Blake learned to make free throws. Kind of changes everything. True Elite player now.

IIRC the Clipps had the second longest winning streak at 17 last season and went out quietly in the first round

Clippers lost to the Nuggets in Denver last night so the winning streak ends at 11. They did have a 17 game streak last year under del Negro.

Counting on Doc Rivers' superior coaching skills to help the Clips advance further in the playoffs - we'll see.

Denver deserved the win last night. I like Brian Shaw and want him to do well as a head coach, just not against the Clipppers!

How 'bout them 76ers?

Nets 22-9 since 1/1. Have the Heat's number!

76'ers on a 21 games losing streak. I know you don't mean them. :D

And yes, the Nets have actually worked out a winning way. Swing the ball a lot, play decent defense, and make the baskets. They're doing it with Pierce who have found his place in the team, Iso Joe, and Blatche taking care of 'core' business, and now Deron seems to have found his touch again. It's a pity that Brook is gone for the season. AK47 Kirilenco is also up and down on injuries. And strangely enough, yeah, they've got the number of Miami by playing like Miami. I read somewhere that Miami is missing Mike Miller's long bombs. And it's a good thing. :D

And Doc has ex-Laker Tyron Lue beside him. I don't know what the expertise of Lue is, but he shackled Allen Iverson in the Finals for a game or two. :D He might be a future Thibodeau. :D

I know Tyron Lue has been coaching with Doc since 2009. Not sure what his specific responsibilites are with the Clippers. Must be doing something good. :)

Phil Jackson magic is working already! Knicks beat the Pacers in the Garden.

Celtics beat the Heat, too.

Did I hear it right, that the Knicks are on a 7 game winning streak??? And PJ is responsible just for this last one by sitting in the stands. :D

The C's will leave their tanking skills behind always to take a stab at Miami's and Dwyane Wade's heart. Their antennas are always raised stiff when these Heat guys come in. Stick it to them. :D

Knicks 3 or 3 and a half games back of Atlanta at 8th. This looks interesting!

so how does his engagement to Jeanie affect league issues

No. 4: NBA addresses Buss-Jackson relationship — Phil Jackson is two days into his new gig as president of the New York Knicks. His fiancee, Los Angeles Lakers executive Jeannie Buss, has been in the front office of the team since 1998. The two started dating in 1999 and got engaged in December of 2012. But with both people in such high-profile roles with their respective teams, the NBA thought it appropriate to establish some parameters to the relationship as it pertains to NBA business, writes Darren Rovell and Ramona Shelbourne of ESPN.com:
An NBA official has acknowledged that the league has put parameters in place to make sure that the high-profile relationship between Jeanie Buss and Phil Jackson doesn’t create any issues.
“The Knicks’ hiring of Phil Jackson is subject to the league’s conflict of interest rules,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass told ESPN.com. “To avoid even the appearance of a conflict, we have addressed the issue with the Knicks and Lakers to ensure that the relationship between Jeanie Buss and Phil Jackson will not affect how the teams operate.”

Since the engagement, sources say the league has gotten more serious about the two being on the up and up.
Recently retired NBA commissioner David Stern had several conversations with Buss as Jackson entertained potential jobs with the Toronto Raptors, the potential Seattle franchise and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Buss acknowledged, in an interview that will air in its entirety on Time Warner Cable Sportsnet in Los Angeles on Wednesday, that she had dinner with new commissioner Adam Silver and the topic was broached.
“There is an understanding all trades are approved by the NBA, and I don’t anticipate any problem because I don’t make the basketball decisions on behalf of the Lakers,” said Buss, who has indeed previously ceded all basketball decisions to her brother Jim and team general manager Mitch Kupchak. “So I really don’t see where there would be a conflict.”
But the league is sensitive to the impression of any impropriety. On Tuesday, Lakers forward Pau Gasol told reporters that he isn’t allowed to talk to his former coach because he’ll be a free agent and any talks with Jackson could be considered tampering.

The Milwaukee Bucks are drawing 'robust' attention from potential buyers, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar confirms interest

By Kelly Dwyer, Yahoo Sports

The Milwaukee Bucks are an abject mess. The team was miserably constructed by general manager John Hammond at owner Herb Kohl’s behest, built to replicate the team’s sub-.500 2012-13 run to an eighth seed and eventual playoff sweep, a season that did the fans no favors while they waited out yet another year without a franchise star. The front office did well to not cling to ex-Bucks like Monta Ellis, Brandon Jennings and J.J. Redick as they entered free agency, but replacing them with O.J. Mayo and other assorted veterans was a huge miss, and paying Larry Sanders as a franchise player hasn’t panned out thus far.

Sanders confirmed that he’s out for the rest of the regular season on Wednesday, a regular season that has seen the Bucks lose 55 of 68 games. Even the woeful Philadelphia 76ers, constructed to lose and owners of an ongoing 21-game losing streak, still have a better record than the team Hammond and Kohl put together in hopes of making the playoffs.

There have been rumblings for over a decade that Kohl was open to selling his Bucks, just as long as the incoming owners kept the team in Milwaukee. Earlier this season Kohl admitted to be seeking minority investors for the squad that he has owned for nearly three decades, but no official movement on that front has been noted by a Bucks leadership group that is still trying to figure out how to replace or at the very least update an ancient and partly-broken Bradley Center.

The league’s worst record and at the very best the Conference’s worst arena haven’t gotten in the way of interest, though. With NBA team valuations at an all time high, the Bucks are still drawing suitors. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s Don Walker confirmed as much on Wednesday:

"It's a pretty robust process," the source said. "There's a lot of interest in the NBA and this is the only team on the market. There is a considerable amount of interest.
"It's safe to say that anybody with the means and interest in the NBA has inquired. A lot of phone calls from around the country," the source said.
Asked if local investors had inquired about investing in the Bucks, the source said "if you draw a circle with Milwaukee as the center, there would be a significant amount of interest within striking distance of the center."
The source declined to say whether Kohl, who has owned the team since 1985, had been talking to investors who want a majority interest in the team, or a minority interest. In December, Kohl said he could not say whether the search for investors might lead to him giving up majority ownership.
This comes on the heels of an interview that hit the interwebs on Tuesday afternoon, quoting former Buck legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as wanting to get involved on an ownership level with the team he once forced to trade him. From a CNBC interview, courtesy BrewHoop:

The team is probably going to change hands soon, I don't know what's going to happen specifically, but I'm keeping an eye on it. I might possibly try to be involved, it would be great to be able to help the franchise where, that I worked for, get back to the top. They deserve it, the Wisconsin sports fans are incredible, and they deserve a first-rate team.
(Again, this is the same guy that forced the Bucks to trade him to either Los Angeles or New York in 1975.)

One of the players the Bucks received in the deal for Kareem was scoring forward Junior Bridgeman, who enjoyed an excellent career with Milwaukee. Bridgeman later entered the fast food ownership fray, to a very successful degree. This is why Kohl recently reached out to the player whose number he retired upon the end of Bridgeman’s playing career.

From the Journal-Sentinel:

According to the Restaurant Franchise Monitor, Bridgeman is Wendy's second largest franchisee. And two years ago, Forbes magazine said Bridgeman was the 18th wealthiest African-American in the country, with an estimated net worth in excess of $200 million.
Bridgeman, reached for comment in Louisville, declined to comment.
Bridgeman has one potential sticking point, though it could be easily solved. Bridgeman is a minority investor in the Sacramento Kings. Under NBA bylaws, investors cannot hold financial positions in more than one team.
Kohl has not set a timetable for finding new investors. And he has not set a limit on the number of investors. But if he were to bring Bridgeman back into the Bucks' fold, it would be a big coup for Kohl.
The idea of former players swooping in to save the Bucks from themselves is a noble one, but in reality it’s going to take far more than these two big names to make this work.

Any new ownership group has to at once placate Kohl with some sort of promise to keep the Bucks in Wisconsin, which everyone should be in favor of, even with the looming possibility of a potentially lucrative move to Seattle acting as a significant option. Despite the “robust” talk of major interest in a team whose valuation could hop up over half a billion dollars despite its relatively small market, this frustration along with no clear resolution for what to do with where the Bucks play while in Milwaukee still stands as a significant stepping stone.

Nobody is falling over themselves to hand some sort of front office role to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. And Bridgeman likely isn’t keen to spend about twice his net worth for a business that doesn’t hand him the guaranteed earnings that a double bacon cheeseburger or Texas Cheese Fries with Chili perpetually roll in. And Seattle can’t even get their foot in the door, so don’t bother asking.

Yes, interest might be “robust” for the only NBA team on the market, but that doesn’t mean things are going to change in Milwaukee any time soon.

But the league is sensitive to the impression of any impropriety. On Tuesday, Lakers forward Pau Gasol told reporters that he isn’t allowed to talk to his former coach because he’ll be a free agent and any talks with Jackson could be considered tampering.

I see something here. When Ainge and McHale as GMs were doing the 7 to 1 KG deal in '08, there were loose talks that Ainge got a preferential deal because of his close ties as a player with McHale in Boston. Now, if a potential future trade involving say Gasol et al and Amare et al, depending on which camp you are and if you see it as lopsided, then the issue of Jeanie and Phil talking at home in their room begins to make you wonder. Engagement ties should weigh more than team mate ties, it would seem.

'That's why I asked the question. I always felt there was an issue there

This isn't nepotism but darn close
