Simply put, solid-state (vs. tube) offers the designer finer control of the musical signal. This is particularly valuable in music with complex waveforms such as classical. Even the best tube designs begin to have difficulty with full-scale orchestral and symphonic music. Ack, as you well know, all designs are compromises. I'm sure you can find a tube designer that can tell you that the designer you quoted has made a certain decision that is driving his statement. Do give a listen to some later CJ gear, and you may be surprised. For what it's worth, I own both SS and tubed amps and pre amps.
