i only want warm and lush when the musical content is warm and lush. we especially want to avoid warm and lush as any sort of overlay or sameness. no smoothing or rounding. we do want transparent and resolving, but also full bodied, liquid and continuous and not grainy or bleached.

solid state can be all those things, but not typically.
100% agree with this.

Avantgarde playing digital through SS will sound bright. Only so much lipstick you can put on it. I can understand in such a system why you think tubes only help colouring
My system does not sound bright by any stretch of the imagination. Even @Ronresnick, who claims he is extremely sensitive to this, commented on its lack of brightness. No one who has listened to my system has asked for the volume to be turned down. Or commented that it is bright sounding.

However, there is treble information. Perhaps you are looking for a sound that is rolled off.

He has CH trios and has videos you can hear the compromises
Whose compromises? Yours?

This comment highlights the point of the main discussion. You like some specific sound and are not shy about telling everyone what that is and that every other sound is "bad". I am not saying that. People are free to choose what they like, but there are some mutally exclusive choises that will be made along the way.

Ron has selected various components for himself saying that they were not bright during audition and subsequently let them go saying they were exactly that. I never trusted his auditions.

looks like you are used to distortions. The video capability of your Beethoven 5 was very clear

Can you point me to the video? I am pretty sure I have never recorded Beethoven 5. I don't play this symphony very often.

Think Kozak posted the B5 on your thread on trios, you posted Dvorak cello and Danse macabre in the compares, and Ron posted the black sabbath from your system on his video coverage

Links?

From there:
"That's no comment on the live sound, but on the video."

Yes video of a live sound, clearly implies video extrapolation of the actual sound. We have discussed this in length. Video is an extrapolation, but if you think that extrapolation tells you the sound is rolled off and lacks oomph, it tells you how much your aural template is coloured by your system’s signature.

That video to me is reflecting loads of oomph and ideal highs, much like any live videos

Look up Todd’s thread

You want me to look through all 16 pages? If you refer to a video, you might as well have a link handy.

You are blissfully clueless about me, my system and my experiences.

I think Todd is right and you are wrong, Ked (unless you can convince me otherwise and find a video of Todd having recorded Beethoven 5). I found on Todd's 55-page thread the only Beethoven 5 on AGs that I remember (thread page 45, post #896):

If you consider the Beethoven 5 on the Avantgarde there, which is not Todd's system, to be sounding bright I agree with you. I said so at the time on the next thread page.

Your Altec video in that post sounds a bit muffled, but much more musical -- no comparison.

These live videos on thread page 47, (post #922)

sound ok in terms of tonal balance, even though they still have some glare and grain on the strings that you don't hear live (as I said that the time, "they don't sound too great in the treble either"). But I guess that's YouTube.

Kozak did post some AG videos a few posts below these (not Beethoven 5, and again not Todds's system), and they sound also bright and bleached out.

But who knows if that's the actual system sound or just the video.

Bingo …

That's why I don't post system videos. The relationship between the system sound on a video and the actual system sound in the room is tenuous at best.

And no, there is nothing to "extrapolate". Except perhaps to some moderate extent when the video sound is halfway decent, which it rarely is.

But who knows if that's the actual system sound or just the video.

Thanks for tracking down those links Al. As far as who knows how the actual system compares to the sound of the video, I would suggest the guy who heard the system and made the video. He of course can listen to both and make an assessment.
