SET amp owners thread

Atmasphere,
This is a SET appreciation thread, if you don’t appreciate SET amps how can you “educate” us??

Taking the roll as teacher in a subject that you clearly don’t believe in is wrong.

Beyond this you have a very significant commercial interest and financial gain from disparaging SET amplifiers that compete with your products within the marketplace.

To teach in a subject where you have a conflict of interest in fundamentally unethical.

I have taught full time for the last 20 years and as a qualified educator can only suggest you are completely off course in taking over a lead educator role in this particular thread.
It would be nice to see Ralph make a SET. I get the roadblocks. RD is expensive

The issue would be Ralph doesn’t think SET is fundamentally a good thing at all… but yes I’d much rather he spent his time trying to benefit SET technology instead of constantly ‘educating’ us against it.

I fully agree Graham. Ralph also took over my system thread for a while, infecting it by marketing his products. He claimed to be educating the readers. He finally agreed with me that my SET amps were well matched to my speakers and he thankfully moved along.

Hey Guys -

I'm not getting in the middle of the conversation with Ralph and who is right, wrong or hijacking.

I also fully admit to not be super-technologically knowledgeable.

I do want to add to the original intention of this thread and say I currently have two SET amps here right now. They both have NO issues keeping up with the bass-heavy vocal trance tracks I listen to. And I'm talking some seriously heavy and sometimes fast bass.

On Opera and vocals they impart an emotional connection for me I find fully additive that has not been matched by other amps I've had here.

So while it I'm sure it's not a technology perfect design, for ME it puts a smile on my face like no other. I'm sold on how for ME PERSONALLY I love SET's.

That amp seems perfect for my swarm.
The company does not answer emails or on their facebook page, no new posts since 2022, maybe if you speak Italien ? I will try directly to Powersoft, Leif highly recommends Powersoft, i trust his judgment, except all his horn sillyness of coarse ;)

I would like to find some class.D's that are affordable. I did get one of these Fosi Audio to try. It doesn't have anywhere near enough guts in power to run subs. It's absolutely perfect to run the speakers in my ceiling.throughout the house. I just connect my phone to it via Bluetooth and stream whatever I want, It sounds very nice and is perfect for that application.

I feel your pain Peter. Going into a thread dedicated to celebrating a specific type of gear (or especially into a personal system thread) and relentlessly banging away at the preferences expressed by the thread and turning what could be valuable and potentially constructive opportunities filled with helpful commentary and useful insights into constipated, entrenched battle zones is usually ultimately not a healthy thing, especially when the full subjective perspective is lost.

I also find (that for me) good practice SET bass (as well as the rest of its range) simply more authentic… others don’t… that’s all good.

People who have SET already are likely all too aware of the kinds of speaker matching necessary for best outcomes. I love the realism and spirit of great SET on a larger light weight paper driver or compression driver. Veer off the ideal and potentials become weaknesses. Like all gear it has its own specific strengths and vulnerabilities.

Experienced SET people (especially in an owners thread) don’t really need to be ‘educated’ that it’s not ideal when speaker choice is inappropriate or being lectured constantly on what SET is like in poor matchups. For any engaged in SET also may well already get that when you get things right for SET the love can bloom.

Old devices are being bad-mouthed everywhere. For example, your old DAC may not sound good, the technology is outdated. But here, technology that is almost 100 years old is being praised to the skies. I really like set amps, I have built some before, but they are a technologically inefficient way of amplifying and listening to music, and Ralph keeps pointing that out.
Maybe that doesn't have to be mentioned in almost every post, it can get annoying.

Do you really think that Ralph, who has been building and selling tube devices for over 40 years, needs to badmouth everything except his devices? I have never read from him "sell your device, my device is much better" that would be aggressive advertising and that could be condemned.

I always think it's good when old hands contribute to the forum and give good tips or share knowledge. A little story: years ago, a number of manufacturers were represented in the very good german forum who they privately shared their knowledge , but they they were expelled. To put it briefly, the end result was the demise of the forum.

Both sides take a deep breath, shift down a gear... have a nice day.

One could rename the thread, say to "Thread of HAPPY owners of SET amps" ;)

How dare you trust your ears....SET is bad, bad BAD! isn't it obvious? Just look at those measurements...no don't listen that's heresy and might turn you away from the true path of Class D...

Ouch pretty high max 1.500V dc for this tube
Yes, Amplifon runs the tube at it's max continuous power rating. Most other GM70 amps are run more conservatively at around 20-30 watts...some even less than that (I think the OMA amp is only 14 watts with this tube). What is clear though is that this tube is a beast compared to 211 and 845 tubes, which realistically don't get more than about 20-25 watts. The 813 in triode mode can get 25 watts and the KR Audio T100 can get around 30 watts. Ayon claims 35 watts for the 82B (a 300b variant on steroids) but I think they never test that high in real life.

Do you even own a SET? I currently own 4, including a single device hybrid amp (AC TriodeFET). If not, then what is YOUR purpose here? To police others remarks?

I truly couldn't care less what you own - your comments are as I described.

Just for fun here is a couple of photos of my former bespoke Pre Amp using genuine Tango transformers (I still own a few) - NOS WE 205D tubes (now all sold) & genuine NOS GEC &/Mullard U52 tubes (I still own 4) - the wooden frame is timber from my old silky oak desk...
