SET amp owners thread

I hope it was a cheap option...I predict a poor match...

Based on price, your own experience, or the rep of decades-old Crown amps? ;)

I posted a few days ago in the What is your favorite 845 tube thread. My Black Shadow return from a total rebuild in a week or so. I only have Shuguang and Pysvane hifi tube. I want to try a good 845 and was wondering about the linlai WE tube and the Psvane ACME. If anyone has tried them, could you post your thoughts in that thread. I have not written off Elrog, but I don't want to spend $2000 if the others get me most all the way there
Thanks, Rex

Best 845 Tubes i do have are Psvane 845 ACME followed by Psvane 845-T-MII/2 and Shuguang 845B

Based on many attempts at mixing tube and SS, class D etc.

I am happy to be wrong...

I think it'll work out for a 320 Hz xo point. It's surprisingly good used full range but certainly not up to the standards most would expect here.

I've tried both my Crown and NCore on my 3-ways and would take the Crown all day every day despite it's faults, the NCore is hard to listen to. My heavily modded Odyssey amp is much better then either but also much more expensive.

Nice! Please could you share any more detail on your line level crossover either here or pm. Thanks v much.
No problem....
for the Mid-High is use a simple 6dB high-pass and calculated the cap by using the input impedance from the amplifier
for the bass it's a 6dB low pass, calculated that the resistor is very low that I have less decrease of the signal
both corner frequencies are layed at -6dB for the slope

Feel fre to contact me by pm

Thanks Joao,

What frequency do you cross and do you not get any “mud” at the crossover point at all?

Well i achieved superb results with TAD CR1 at 250hz with HF CAT JL5 and LF Nord NCORE NC 500 MK II ...
How do you do the gain/level matching of the different amps?
Or are they both the same gain coincidentally?

These have same gain. Otherwise with Xilica 4080 just LF or my Mcintosh MX151which has bi amp outs and is a really good DAC when Room Perfect switched off

I got cold feet and cancelled the ordered.
I've also found that by toeing out the speakers I get more woofer contribution.
Oh, well if it was cheap maybe the experimentation would have been fun. If you don't have enough umph with just the Allnic, then find an old VAC 70/70 to put on the bass, which will match up a lot better and can be found for 3-4K. I had a VAC 30/30 in the past and that was a good sounding amp with quite robust bass power and control...I would expect the 70/70 to be similar. Other options would be the Antique Sound labs Hurricane or their 845 PP amp (60 watts).

Or get a NAT MAGMA-heard them in Munich some years ago, sounded really dynamic and nice

Nat magma M is 80 watts and cheaper, and Nat transmitter better value in used market if one can find it, it is 120 watts. Lamm hybrids will also give you a lot of oomph

Yes, a NAT would work (I like NAT products...had their Plasma preamp a while back) but I was talking about biamping and still using his Allnic on the mid/high horns and the VAC or other strong PP triode amp on the bass. I was also thinking cost conscious.

The Ocatve stuff is very stable if you want Tubes or CAT
