Sme 3012 R

I know this old arm is good but I don’t know why David,Rockitman,Tang,Ron,Mike
Use or will use having top tonearm like Sat,EliteAxiom,Black Beauty,Durand

Why 3012 is so special?
I never had and I don’t understand
Only to know for my curiosity
Regards
Gian

Good Morning (and a happy new year),

what improvement to expect when upgrading to a brass knife saddle on the 3012R?

Best regards, Tony

This was confirmed to me when some friends and I took the same cables around to test in our respective systems. The character of the cables and power cords, first heard and identified by doing comparisons in one system, were then heard in the other systems, regardless of system, gear, typology, or set up. In some cases, the cable or power cord character was so evident, it completely changed the overall character of the system, rather than just "balance" or complement the sound of the system. It was easily heard and for me, it could become a distraction with a spotlight shouting, "look at me".

I prefer cables that simply seem to allow one to hear the components. It is often hard to know what is what, but when one hears more music and less spotlighting, one gets a sense. My preferred cables and cords, based on my somewhat limited comparisons, tend to be simpler, more practical designs with good connections. And a phono cable should be flexible and not so heavy as to affect the balance of a suspended turntable design requiring its own support structure. The fascinating thing is that among those of us who did these comparisons, opinions varied considerably. As David writes, personal preference is a different thing.
Just read this and the ddk quote. I thought I was bonkers when I said whenever Nordost is in a system it sounds like Nordost regardless of the system…

No. It means you can hear. You are certainly not bonkers. This is what many wires, cords, and components do. It distinguishes the brand. Some like it and others do not, just like anything in our systems. Nordost is a successful brand.

A question on 3012R, I have a problem on the arm lift, it raise the armtube too high up, although it decend vertically, I wish the armtube could be lowered, probably like what the manual suggested, 6mm between stylus and vinyl surface. Is the arm lift adjustable ?

It’s adjustable. I believe it’s in the manual.

The collar can rotate around the post. There is a set screw that you have to loosen, and then you rotate the upper collar, which is attached to the arm lift and armrest and you turn it clockwise or anti-clockwise I cannot remember to the proper height and then you can reset it by locking the set screw. The bottom collar and set screw or what determine the arm height. The upper collar determines the arm lift height. I am not sure if this is described in the manual or not but it is very obvious once you look at it and think about it.

Depending on space around the turntable, you may have to remove the arm to do it. Good luck.

Thank You PeterA , I'll check again base on your description.

I’d kept that opinion to myself for a long time because of the fact Nordost are very successful and didn’t want to annoy/upset people. An all Nordost loom is not for me - although the Tyr tonearm cable (after Nordost ‘toast it’) is superb

Loosen this screw and turn the lift base clockwise down until you have the right height. Unscrew the anti-skating holder. Removing the arm is difficult when it is installed. Rotate the liftbase. Always unscrew the headshell; you can quickly damage the cartridge.20250110_084416.jpg

Thanks, managed to get the armlift base lowered following your advise. BTW Can anyone tell me what is the component between bearing and counterweight ? What does it do when I turn the screw in it ?Component.jpg

Thank you very much @PeterA . A lot to learn from you guys on this arm.

You are more than welcome. The idea is to balance the arm both vertically and horizontally. When it is floating just above the level of the platter surface, you adjust that screw so that the arm does not drift either inward towards the spindle or outward. I think it is a very clever design and very easy to adjust.

set the lateral balance as follows:

First adjust the tracking weight. Then, without anti-skating!, adjust the lateral balance as follows:
The tonearm rests in the arm holder. Then slowly lift the arm with a string behind the bearing.
If the headshell rotates from the horizontal position in one direction, the boom with the support weight must be moved either towards the tonearm tube or away from the tonearm. Don't forget to fix the screw after that.
Take your time if you don't do it correctly the bearing will wear out or your azimuth of the cartridge will be crooked also high wear.best to use dental floss for that, good luck and have fun.
