Statement e2 has come available…

IF . . . I did not have the Pendragons.

And I still have trouble getting comfortable with paper drivers that are 30, 40, 50 years old. It doesn’t seem to be a problem in the vintage speakers loved by our vintage speaker members, so my concern must be unfounded. But I don’t understand it.

As you know MartinLogan now is owned by a venture-capital company. I can’t imagine any senior executive there has the interest to support a one-off possible restoration project.

But the biggest concern would be replacement of the electrostatic panels. A prospective purchaser would have to nail down with MartinLogan that replacement panels could be ordered on a special order basis.
Agree on all.

I don't' think there is an issue with paper drivers. It's the foam surrounds that are the problem.
I recall driving to Overture Audio in Delaware to see/hear the ML e2 Statement driven by Spectral mono blocks. Quite a revelation. It was just to biga commitment. Timing is everything. Ehen ML discontinued the model there were two dealers unloading heir demos for 35k. Just pick 'em up.
I did not have the space and I would have had to get a home equity loan. Missed it again.
Personally, I think the woofer section alone is worth it. Maybe GR Research could build a tweeter section. Or maybe Gary could do it. ML vacillates on whether they will continue to make panels for their discontinued models.

I received a very prompt, cordial and candid response to some questions from a technician at MartinLogan:

Dear Lagonda,

What difficulties did you have reconditioning your Statement E2 woofer towers? Did any of the surrounds of the drivers need to be replaced?

All purchase decisions would hinge on how/where these were stored. From his statements (no pun intended) they have been in the crates for many, many years. Heat, humidity, dust, etc. would greatly affect their condition. Buying the replacement panels to have on hand would be a no brainer at this point.

No difficulties at all Ron, they where as new, and still are, the paper cones hold up well with age. Fast, deep bass with the right amplifiers. I actually had a spare set of panels, regretfully i sold them with my first set of Statements. My second set of woofer towers where missing one of the custom made spikes, i was able to purchase it from Martin Logan, at a hefty price ! None of the drivers have to work hard to produce extreme levels of sound, there are so many of them.

From the seller on Craigslist in response to my inquiry:

Hi Ron,

Thank you for responding to the ad.

You are correct. They were purchased new and the speakers were only in use for one year.

The crates have been stored in a garage area this whole time. It has been protected by the weather (the guest house sits above the garage and is set back from the door) and the typical temp range is 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Please let me know if I can answer any other questions you may have. Thank you.

Elizabeth

Interesting. They are in Massachusetts, I believe. Though she may be telling the truth to the best of her knowledge. 65deg on the low end seems a bit suspect given the weather in that area of the country. Especially in a garage. Each piece would need to be uncrated and inspected thoroughly. IMHO..

If ML is willing shipping back to the factory direct from the seller would be the way to go.
As for thinking long and hard, since when have audiophiles been frugal or pragmatic.;)

The speakers in the facebook feed are not the speakers shown in the crates. One set has wood trim, the other set has piano lacker finish. The set for sale are listed in Boston, the facebook feed speakers are in Ontario.

Is it possible that my assumption was wrong? That instead these are two different sets of Statement E2’s broke down into crates and posted within a week or so of each other? How much of a coincidence would that be? Hmmm..

I confirmed with the poster they are not the same owner…I’ve deleted the mistaken posts. I’ve owned Martin Logan since 1997 and have never seen a set of crates for the e2, much less two separate unrelated sets of crates in storage in a one week span…. crazy!

AZWink, thank you for posting about these speakers, i would never have stumbled upon them on Craigslist by myself ! :) Being a somewhat skeptical individual residing in Europe, i asked PeterA of the Boston audio chapter of WBF if he was in a reasonable distance to the seller. He was not, but gracefully offered to drive for over an hour to inspect them visually for me. He brought our own MadFloyd with him. They confirmed that the speakers where as described and took pictures. Thank you again Peter and Ian, i am very grateful ! :) The speakers are now mine, and with the assistance of my helpful friend ddk and his shipping connections on the way to Denmark. Thank you David you always come trough !:)
