Well, I have truly lost my audio mind and joined the ranks of the R2R world. I explored used decks, new decks (although the new Revox was announced after I made my decision) and highly refurbished decks. I was limited to a desktop unit just due to space limitations in my room. I also investigated various tape sources (and prices, which are breathtaking) and even after all of that due diligence which indicated there was nothing sane about this, I took the plunge anyway. I did this based on my experience that tape so often sounds so gorgeous to me and I love the tactile nature of the experience.

So, big shout out to Steve Smith of Two Track Audio for "enabling" me with a refurbished and upgraded Studer A810 and Nick Doshi for "enabling" me with an Evolution Tape Pre. Nick was kind enough to rewire the 810 so that I have a direct XLR out from the head to the preamp and it just sounds great. I purchased all sorts of doodads (demagnetizer, adaptors, take up reels, etc., et al) and, yes, I purchased tapes. I somehow continue to purchase more tapes and watch the balance in my bank account get reduced in astonishingly big chunks for a small number of titles. I do this because the whole thing sounds gorgeous (as long as you feed it good tape, and if you don't, my vinyl likely sounds better if I have a decent copy). Steve and Nick were quite patient with my many questions, all of which revealed my true newbie status in the tape world. Our own DMinches was also quite gracious with his time on the phone and texts as I asked him yet more questions.

I could have gone lots of ways on this, but felt like this was a good starting point for a reasonable price (as far as these things go). Thanks again to Steve, Nick and Dave and to this forum for providing so much good background information.

Enjoy in peace, its a pleasure working with and getting to know you.

@BR549 - it was an absolute pleasure working with you and I sincerely appreciate the local referrals. Thanks to Jim, there's now a growing cluster of A810s in the Greater Atlanta region with two additional machines delivered this past week and more arriving in the coming months. The tape scene is expanding rapidly in The ATL. Enjoy and share more photos along the way.

For those unfamiliar with the Studer 810, 1) It has 3 library wind speeds, including super slow for delicate master tapes. For master tape work it can't be beat for delicate handling.; 2) One can rewind or fast forward with the tape above the entire headlock so the tape is not touching the heads and is following a direct path to the take-up or supply reel. No headwear nor tape wear due to head contact on rewind or fast forward; 3) Stock electronics sound surprisingly good on record mode. Playback with stock electronics is not good and hence the Doshi for playback electronics.

The A810 is built like a tank and can take a lot of abuse. That's why many radio stations use them, and I have seen how some of the technicians abuse those machines ! I think there is a 4-track playback head available for the A810. Add this to the headblock, and you can buy a lot of great sounding recordings for very little money (at least for classical). You should do this before others catch on. Jazz and Rock tape prices have already gone through the roof.

This is what I was using for a lot of my Jerry Garcia transfers, along with the Doshi.... Solid machine....

Congrats BR549. I’m glad to know it’s all working out for you. I also have a Studer A810 and Doshi pre on order, super excited for them to show up.
