The magic of stereo

I was one of the "drummers" on this. :)

That is way cool! More WBF members I can hear and not just read.

We've got Ron Party's and Steve's clapping on Friday Night in San Francisco too. :)

I think I had the rain stick. David is a collector of percussion instruments from around the world.

Now Ron and Steve were on Friday Night in SF? I love that session. The SACD is amazing.

They were in the audience :)

Rub it in some more won't ya? ;) ;) ;)

I must have about three dozens or more CD players, Universal DVD players and Blu-ray players, and SACD players; and I know very well the issues with most of them!
I'm sure you've actually tried this, Bob, but on the off chance that it may be relevant for you, have you gone to quite a bit of trouble to really thoroughly, and carefully, clean the lens area of the laser. I've done this a couple of times on machines, and it has been very effective for me ...

May not be particularly relevant to anyone, but this reminds me of seeing Vollenweider live in Sydney, nice and close, with a beautiful array of percussion on stage. The finale was a synchronised drumming duo(?) with 2 chaps, the whole experience was a pure delight ...

Frank, I've been opening electronic components and fixing them for about 40 years, so yes I know exactly how to do a manual job.

The thing Frank is that with Blu-ray players and their laser lenses, they are more delicate and also prone to misalignment, plus with the HDMI copy-protection protocol, you have tray mechanisms that simply don't last!
For example, just last week I cleaned the two laser lenses inside my Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blu-ray player; and now that player won't read any discs, or those Blu-ray discs that load, eventually break into pixelization! And when I eject those discs, they have a greasy residue on them!
The laser lenses are clean, but the tracking is wrong and that I don't know how to fix it myself!
Do you?

That's all a bit disturbing! How does HDMI copy-protection protocol relate to fragile tray mechanisms?

And are you saying that the cleaning of the lenses actually damaged the alignment, that they were reading before cleaning, and not, after cleaning? And where does that grease come from? What sort of cleaning agent were you using?

No, I know nothing of alignment procedures; from the sound of it, a bit of solid reading is going to be required to find out what's going on ...

Short!

Lol I knew that it will raise some eyebrows!
Of course that does not affect the tray mechanism, but it does affect the entire machine!
...Because some discs simply won't load at all! And with about 2,000 Blu-ray discs I know some...

And are you saying that the cleaning of the lenses actually damaged the alignment, that they were reading before cleaning, and not, after cleaning? And where does that grease come from? What sort of cleaning agent were you using?

About three months ago my Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blu-ray player wouldn't load Blu-ray discs (many titles from Allience Video and others as well); so I removed the top cover, and also the cover of the disc transport, and cleaned the two laser lenses with a Q-tip and a drop of isopropyl alcohol and wiped gently the two small lenses. I put back everything and the machine was working like a charm! Great!
Then last week it started again, but this time it was worst (more Blu-ray discs wouldn't load)!
So here we go again with the lenses cleaning; but this time things are even worst! And I did applied a little more presssure to make sure the two laser lenses were clean. Now this BD player is totally caput!
No more Panasonic for me thank you very much sir! This one didn't last more than eighteen months!
And another fellow with two Panny BD60s experienced the exact same problem (Blu-rays not loading); so he had them at the repair shop three times in less than a year!

I did call Panasonic and explained my issue (spent three hours on the phone with four technical customer helpers)! Final verdict: out of warranty (one year) = out of luck!

* The grease is coming from the side metal bars that are the sliders for the laser assembly!

You need more than simple solid reading Frank; you need a special software disc, special tools, and expertise in laser lens alignment. It is time consuming and time is money!

You can replace the laser lens assembly only, but you need the expertise still to align it with the transport.
Or you can replace the entire tray mechanism!
Might is well buy a brand new BD player! Those Panny now cost $100 or so (without multichannel analog outputs). I paid $500 Canadian (with tax) for my BD55 back then. It had good sound for CDs (reasonable), and some cool features as well. The analog section was nice with quality caps (Rubycon, Edna) and DACs (Burr-Brown). I bought it because I knew it was a good player. But it had that reliability issue from its tracking! Just not a solid transport, or tray mechanism! Plastic and all! Not good for consistency with heat!

...Suite.

I have three more Blu-ray players; an Oppo BDP-83, a Sammy 5000, and a Sony 570.
I also have two Toshiba HD DVD players.
And I git tons od CD, DVD, Universal DVD, and SACD players.
And three inexpensive Turntables.

And when you are into those type of playback sources, and not into Sreaming music from the Internet (FLAC, WAV, etc), or iPod, or iApple, or USB stick, or MP3, or any computer music at all, compressed or uncompressed, like I am; you need accuracy in the tracking device or your preamp, amp, and louspeakers are obsolete! And you can kiss kiss good by to that "Magic of Stereo"!

A friend of mine just bought a Meridian Upsampling CD player ($4,000), the G08.2, and she just loves it! Kate is a she (future Doctor).
She is very happy with the sound quality after returning a $3,000 Thorens Turntable!

Hopefully the tracking will last more than few years!

*** I did write a longer original post prior to these last two here, with more info and all the full enchilada; but inadvertently by accident I click the wrong button and pouf! Gone!
Don't you just luv it when it happened! Lol of frustration! Start all over again but this time the flow of the moment is simply lost into the space of neurological cells! Lol ...Protons, neutrons and electrons... Hopefully positive ones! And not negatives! Lol

Yes, know it well ... As someone who was in the software game for decades I have little tolerance for programming that's not robust, in other words, ALL programming! Simple things like automatically always keeping safety buffers of typed input, without having to play games with settings and suchlike, should have been sorted out years ago in the software industry ...

By the way, you appear to have to have a very impressive music and video software collection, what's the story there ...? :)

Frank

Frank, there is NO story! I am a software person; I bought LPs, VHS, CDs, DVDs, SACDs, HD DVDs, Blu-rays for many years, and still, and this is where the bulk of my work earnings went and go!

Do you really need figures, numbers, amount of money? Would that improve your life? ;)
...That's exactly what I thought! :)
