Alcohol and Marijuana also increase musical enjoyment. But I don't think they are good for you. Of course that is debatable.
Twenty years ago I had my system really dialed in - the perfect room, SF Amati Homage speakers, amazing tube preamp and Merlot amps from Supratek. A friend listened to the system and kept repeating: "You don't need drugs, You don't need drugs." I felt that described it perfectly, and that is the beauty of a nice audio system, it can transport you emotionally and psychologically without the need for chemical stimulants. Then one of the amps died, I got married, moved, sold the Amatis...
I think sometimes I'm chasing a particular experience that was much more than the sum it's audio components. I had another magical moment I'll never forget with inexpensive Martin Logan speakers, GTA tube amps, an Oracle Delphi turntable playing Vivaldi violin concertos, less than $4,000 for the total system. It did not require an expensive system to have that experience, it was more about the context, playing music well suited to the strengths of the speakers, my mental state, the person I shared it with. But it also made me aware of what was possible and motivated me to invest more time and resources in audio. If people want to spend mega bucks changing and hopefully improving their audio system, more power to them. There is fun in experimenting with different gear even if it is not always "better". And who cares what anyone else says or does? It does not affect my enjoyment of my system.
